World War 3 news: Israel jets launch strikes in Syria to prevent ‘killer drone’ attack | World | News

The attack took place in Aqraba, southeast of the Syrian capital of Damascus. Tehran is considered to be one of Damascus’s closest allies. Military spokesman Jonathan Conricus told reporters: “The IDF (Israeli Defence Force), by Israeli aircraft, was able to thwart an Iranian attempt led by the Quds force from Syria to conduct an attack on Israeli targets in northern Israel using killer drones.

The attack targeted: “A number of terror targets and military facilities belonging to the Quds force as well as Shiite militias.

“The threat was significant and these killer drones were capable of striking targets with significant capacity.”

The Quds force are part of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards.

Mr Conricus claimed on Thursday Israel had prevented an attempt to launch a drone attack but did not provide further details.

Since the beginning of the Syrian Civil War, Israel has launched several strikes across the border, which it has said are against Iranian and Hezbollah targets.

Hezbollah, the Lebanese Shiite militant group is considered a proxy of Tehran and supports the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

In June 2016, Israel launched Operation Good Neighbour to provide humanitarian aid to civilian victims of the conflict but in September last year, the IDF announced the operation would be closed due to the return of Mr al-Assad’s government to power in the south of Syria.

Ever since the current Iranian regime gained power in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, they have not recognised Israel and leadership refers to Israel as ‘the Zionist regime.”

Israel accuses Iran of involvement in terror attacks against Israeli and Jewish targets.

As reported by the Times of Israel, Mohammad Reza Naqdi, the commander of Basij militia of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said in 2015 that “erasing Israel of the map” is “nonnegotiable”.

He added: “The Zionists should know that the next war won’t be confined to the present borders and the Mujahedeen will push them back.”

The Basij is a religious volunteer force founded in the midst of the 1979 revolution to act as a moral police and suppress dissenting voices.

Iran’s last Shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, had enjoyed warm relations with Israel but the revolutionary leader Ayatollah Khomeini declared the state to be an “enemy of Islam” and “The Little Satan”.
