Winds of Winter release is George RR Martin’s priority before writing House of the Dragon | Books | Entertainment

Earlier this week, Game of Thrones fans were hit with the news that the Naomi Watts-led prequel, set thousands of years before A Song of Ice and Fire, had been cancelled after shooting the pilot. Nevertheless, HBO have greenlit House of the Dragon with a full first season order. Based on George RR Martin’s Fire and Blood, the Game of Thrones prequel will be set a few hundred years before the hit show and focus on House Targaryen, presumably starting with Aegon the Conqueror uniting Westeros and forging the Iron Throne. Martin has written enthusiastically about House of the Dragon on his latest blog post, teasing he might write some episodes – but what about The Winds of Winter?

With all the author’s involvement as a TV producer on adaptations of his work, completing A Song of Ice and Fire has been going slowly.

Martin still has two books to go in The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring, with the last book, A Dance with Dragons, being published eight years ago.

Nevertheless, on the blog entry, Martin has committed to completing The Winds of Winter before writing any episodes of House of the Dragon, so fans can rest easy.

The 71-year-old wrote: “There’s a writer’s room to be assembled, episodes to be broken down and scripted, a cast and crew to be assembled, budgets and production details to be worked out.

“As yet, we don’t even know where we will be shooting… though I expect we will revisit at least some of the countries David & Dan used for GAME OF THRONES (Ireland, Iceland, Scotland, Croatia, Morocco, Malta, and Spain).

“I expect to be involved in all of this to some extent… and, who knows, if things work out, I may even be able to script a few episodes, as I did for the first four seasons of GAME OF THRONES.”

Martin added: “But… let me make this perfectly clear… I am not taking on any scripts until I have finished and delivered WINDS OF WINTER.

“Winter is still coming, and WINDS remains my priority, as much as I’d love to write an episodes of HOUSE.”

Of course, this commitment does also open up the possibility of his writing order changing.

At the moment, Martin intends to finish The Winds of Winter, then write A Dream of Spring with a Dunk & Egg short story in between each novel as a palate cleanser.

After this, he plans to write the second volume of his 300-year history of the Targaryen dynasty, Fire and Blood.

But with potential plans to write episodes of House of Dragon and maybe pressure to focus on Fire and Blood 2 for the sake of the new show, perhaps Martin will push A Dream of Spring to end of the list?

Hopefully, this won’t be the case as the author knows that completing A Song of Ice and Fire is his priority.

In a recent interview, Martin spoke out on the pressure of completing the series amid fan impatience.

He said: “A certain portion of [the fans] are really impatient and snarky about it.

“You know, you can get one person who posts 150 messages in three days, all of which is ‘Where is Winds of Winter?’”
