Venezuela news: Donald Trump sends US military to surround Maduro | World | News

US troops have been deployed in Guyana, which is located west of Venezuela. With US allies Brazil bordering to the south and Colombia to the east, Maduro is under more pressure as a quarter of his citizens suffer in dire poverty. With Chinese and Russian influence increasing in Guyana, Trump hopes the deployment of US air force will strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

The trip will benefit residents of Guyana as the US looks to build community centres and women’s shelters.

Major General Andrew Croft said: “Guyana is going to become a larger player in this region, both economically and politically in the future, so it’s important that we are closely tied with them.

“What we leave is an enduring, physical presence in addition to the partnerships that we build.”

General Croft cited medical facilities and schools built in 1997 that are still being used today to justify his claims.

Trump has recently placed huge sanctions on Venezuela, in an attempt to oust Maduro out of his role as President.

Maduro has always received support from Russia and China. Moscow permitted Caracas to make “minimal payments” in easier debt terms whilst China has previously offered the Venezuelan administration its vote of confidence.

The battle for influence between the US, China and Russia goes beyond South America. Putin has been disruptive to NATO, selling missiles to member Turkey, a deal that could be used to gather intelligence on UK, US and China’s military operation.

The Russian President has also agreed to cooperate with India to develop military equipment and weaponry.

Another diplomatic one-up on Trump who jokingly told Putin to “don’t meddle in the [US] election” at the G20 summit in Osaka.
