UK weather forecast: Urgent flood alerts in place as heavy rain and wind batters Britain | Weather | News

September looks set for a wet and windy start to the month, as heavy downpours are forecast in much of the UK. Flood alerts are in place along coasts and rivers around England, Wales, Northern Ireland and along the west coast of Scotland. But a northwest/southeast split is set to take place as the south is expected to have a drier start to the month with sunny intervals.

Met Office meteorologist Oli Claydon said: “Broadly speaking for the UK there’s a northwest/southeast split for the next couple of days, with at times wet and windy weather for Scotland and the North, and drier weather in the south and east.

“It’s quite a pronounced difference to the northwest where they’re going to be affected through much of the week.”

But the southeast won’t completely escape the wet weather, as wet and windy weather is set to hit the south of England on Wednesday.

The Environment Agency have also warned the region could see flooding next to rivers and in coastal areas due to seasonal tides.

Mr Claydon said: “Rain can be expected in nearly all parts of the UK at some point through the week, with a cold front moving east from Tuesday evening.”

Gov.uk have issued 17 flood alerts across the UK warning that flooding is possible.

The area most likely to be affected was the west coast of England, which saw eight amber alerts put in place.

Tuesday will be particularly breezy, with cloudy skies and patches of rain.

JUST IN: UK weather: Britain set for 3 MONTHS of heavy rain

The downpours will reappear on Friday, with only the south or England remaining dry.

Temperatures look set to remain fairly mild, with highs of 23C.

The Met Office have warned Britain will be battered by three months of heavy rain and muggy conditions.

Throughout September, the country will see long spells of rain and strong winds.

But forecasters predict temperatures could be higher than usual.

The latest long-range Met Office forecast said: “Overall we should expect spells of rain or showers, which could be heavy at times, interspersed with brief periods of quieter and more settled weather.

“A more prolonged spell of settled weather may develop towards the end of September, but there remains a lot of uncertainty in the forecast.

“Temperatures are expected to vary around average for the time of year and, perhaps, become a touch higher than average later in the period.”
