UK weather: Britain hit by weekend WASHOUT – Flood alerts in place as heavy rain strikes | Weather | News


People are being warned that flooding is likely as the torrential weather lashes western regions over the next couple of days. One yellow warning is in place over parts of Wales and northern England, including Manchester, on Saturday night and into Sunday. The warnings will last from 6pm on Saturday to 5pm on Sunday.

The Met Office said: “Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely.

“Spray and flooding on roads will probably make journey times longer.

“Bus and train services will probably be affected with journey times taking longer.

“Some interruption to power supplies and other services likely.”

The Environment Agency has issued seven flood alerts for today, in central, south-west and south England.

This means there could be flooding in rivers including, the lower Avon, lower Soar, lower Tame, middle Tame, Anker, Sence, Trent and upper Tamar.

Greg Dewhurst, a Met Office forecaster, said this morning that the rain could last three weeks.

He said: “From midnight last night to midnight tonight, some places in Scotland will get 40mm of rain.

“We could be facing rain for the next three weeks. There are signs it may become a bit drier and brighter towards the second week of October.”

Friday morning will be mostly cloudy with frequent heavy showers in the west, according to Meteogroup.

Some of the showers will be thundery, but eastern areas will be mostly dry with sunny intervals.

Friday night will be mostly cloudy with showers in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

There will be sunny spells and one or two showers in England and Wales.

Through the night it will be mostly dry with clear spells in Scotland and eastern England but there will be showers in the west.

Saturday will be largely cloudy with showers, which will be most frequent in the west.

There will be a brisk south-westerly wind in the south.

Sunday will be overcast with heavy rain, especially in eastern areas. Western areas will be bright with blustery showers during the afternoon.
