Trump latest: Queen ‘lost for words’ after state visit cancelled | World | News

Queen Margarethe was stunned over Trump’s impulse decision after his dispute with Denmark over purchasing Greenland, claimed Danish newspaper BT. Trump pulled out of the state visit just two weeks before he was set to arrive in Copenhagen with First Lady, Melania. A spokesperson for the Danish Queen said the royal house was “surprised” to hear the news.

They said: “That was a surprise! We are simply lost for words.”

The Royal household in Denmark had put in a lot of work and effort into the visit as they prepared to welcome Trump.

BT reported efforts included ordering food and drink for the occasion.

The Queen’s staff even cancelled their summer holidays to prepare for the visit after Her Majesty invited him to visit her country last month.

The cancellation arose after Trump’s expressed interest in buying Greenland was quashed.

The ice capped country is currently ruled by Denmark.

The President was told under no circumstances was Greenland for sale.

Earlier this week Trump told Twitter how he felt there was no need for him to visit Denmark anymore.

Former Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt tweeted: “Is that some kind of joke?

“Deeply insulting to the Greenlandic and Danish people.”

Former US ambassador to Denmark, Rufus Gifford, said: “He was invited by the Queen for a state visit. She invited him, he accepted it.

“They’ve been waiting for him for weeks. The Danes and the Greenlanders rejected his project.

“He rejects an entire kingdom. He behaves like a child.”

Royal expert Sebastian Olden-Jørgensen told BT the cancellation was “not something we have seen in Denmark before.”

He added: “That is not how things are done here.”

Danish political commentator Thomas Larsen said: “This is an insult of the highest weight. A state visit usually helps confirm a friendship, a relationship and an alliance between two countries.”

Soren Espersen of the right-wing Danish People’s Party said: “If he is truly contemplating this, then this is final proof that he has gone mad.”

It emerged Trump had held serious talks with US officials over the potential purchase of Greenland from Denmark.

When the news broke, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen told reporters that Trump’s talk of purchasing the island was “absurd”.

Ms Frederisken previously told Danish broadcaster DR: “It’s an absurd discussion, and Kim Kielsen (Greenland’s premier) has of course made it clear that Greenland is not for sale. That’s where the conversation ends.”
