Tax relief: Why you may not be eligible to claim tax relief on job expenses | Personal Finance | Finance

Tax relief means that a person pays less tax to take account of money they’ve spent on specific things, or they get tax back or repaid in another way. Some types of tax relief are automatic, while others may need to be applied for. It may be that a person can claim tax relief if they’re employed and required to buy specific items for their job or to travel for work. This is if they use their own money for things that must be bought for their job and they are only used for work.

Fees and/or subscriptions which one pays to approved professional organisations may also be something an individual can claim tax relief for.

However, this is only if they need to have membership or it relates to their job.

Should a person need to travel for work, they may be able to claim tax relief on the cost of money that’s spent on food or overnight expenses.

In this situation, a person may be able to claim tax relief for money they’ve spent on things such as public transport costs, hotel accommodation if an overnight stay is required, food and drink, congestion charges and tolls, parking fees, as well as business phone calls and printing costs.

People who work at home or use a vehicle at home may also be eligible to claim tax relief.

The amount of Income Tax a person pays depends on their annual taxable income.

The standard Personal Allowance is £12,500 and this means that those eligible for the Personal Allowance do not pay tax on the first £12,500 of taxable income in the tax year.

It may be that a person has a different Personal Allowance – such as if they claim Marriage Allowance or Blind Person’s Allowance.

If they have an annual income that exceeds £100,000, their Personal Allowance will be reduced.
