The Australian Arms Hotel on Penrith’s High Stree has been placed on lockdown after hearing “volley of gunfire, around 25 shots or so”. another witness told Channel 7 News.

A police spokeswoman told the Sydney Morning Herald the riot squad, the police helicopter and the dog unit had been deployed.

New South Wales (NSW) Police, responsible for the Sydney area, have warned the public to stay away from the area.

NSW Police tweeted: “A police operation is underway in the vicinity of St Marys and Penrith Police Stations.

“Police are urging all members of the public to avoid the area until further notice.”
