Steph Curry broken hand update: When will Warriors star likely return after freak accident | Other | Sport

The Golden State Warriors’ worst fears were realised on Wednesday night when it was announced Steph Curry had broken his left hand in the match against the Phoenix Suns – but he may not be out for too long.

Two-time MVP Curry drove to the rim under pressure from two defenders before crashing hard to the ground, landing on both his hands.

But the situation looked a lot worse when Suns centre Aaron Baynes accidentally fell back on Curry’s left hand, leaving the Warriors guard in clear agony.

He left the court and walked to the locker room, clutching his left hand in concerning scenes for Warriors fans.

And the franchise confirmed after the match that Curry had undergone x-rays on his left wrist and hand, showing he had suffered a break.

Golden State have already had to cope without Klay Thompson, who is still recovering from an injury suffered during the NBA Finals.

But Curry may not be on the injury table for too long.

A CT scan will ultimately determine whether Curry needs surgery and that will determine the length of time Curry will be out of action.

If the 31-year-old doesn’t require surgery on his hand, the best case scenario would be a three-week window before he returns.

That’s according to Medline Plus, who report a splint would need to be worn for three weeks before being re-evaluated.

For Curry, the main positive to take away was that it wasn’t his shooting hand, meaning he might still be able to get work done in the gym once it has relatively healed.

The most high-profile similar injury happened to Russell Westbrook back at the start of the 2014 season.

The former Oklahoma City Thunder star required surgery after breaking his hand in the second games of the campaign, but he returned just over three weeks later.

The Warriors went on to lose the match against the Suns, who led by a score of 43-14 in the first quarter.

It means Golden State have fallen to 1-3 in the Western Conference and are in desperate need of a turnaround in fortunes in order to stay in touch with the playoff places while Curry is out of action.
