SOUTHAMPTON 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED

HT: And that’s the break. Difficult one to summarise really because not a great deal has actually happened. Daniel James scored a cracker and other than that – just vast amounts of huffing and puffing with no end product.

45: Two minutes of added time and it’s Southampton applying the pressure. Paul Pogba loses the ball for the umpteenth time but Boufal nor Ward-Prowse can deliver a decent cross.

42: Booked! Harry Maguire booked for a late stamp on Che Adams. No real malice but that wasn’t too pretty.

Some game-management from the visitors here. They’ve spent an eternity taking throw-ins down the left channel, which is upsetting home supporters.

39: Southampton warming to the task now. Ward-Prowse floats the ball over to the arriving Boufal, who cuts inside before thrashing one at McTominay.

36: Sofiane Boufal might want to swap flanks. He’s spent most of the first half in Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s back pocket. The right-back is winning every tackle and predicts everything the Moroccan attempts.

33: Whey! Biggest Southampton cheer of the afternoon goes to… Mike Dean! Vestergaard hammers a clearance that flies straight at the referee, hits him, and drops kindly for Gunn.

30: Juan Mata spots the forward run from Marcus Rashford. The England striker reaches the byline before smashing a low drive into the penalty area that Vestergaard prods behind for a corner.

Southampton half-clear it before the offside Rashford heads wide.

27: Could be a long afternoon for Che Adams today. He’s supposed to be flanked by Danny Ings and Sofiane Boufal – but neither are anywhere near the striker. Totally isolated.

24: Save! Daniel James is relentless. He glides into a central position to collect Marcus Rashford’s short pass before leathering one at Gunn. It stings the goalkeeper’s palms and Romeu clears.

21: Left-back Kevin Danso, who’s on loan for the season from Augsburg, goes in the book for clipping Andreas Pereira’s heels.

18: Manchester United really controlling things here. That goal has settled any nerves and got them playing some good stuff. Aaron Wan-Bissaka comes of the left channel but he’s narrowly offside when volleying over.

15: Manchester United fans in full voice now as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side turn the screw. Southampton’s pressing game has dropped in intensity – allowing the visitors tons of space.

13: Daniel James has now scored as many Premier League goals for Manchester United as Alexis Sanchez.

SOUTHAMPTON 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED – JAMES

10: GOAL! Daniel James does it again! The summer signing from Swansea scores for a second-successive match with an absolute beauty.

Scott McTominay sprays it wide for the winger, who cuts inside and curls it into the top right-hand corner. Ralph Hasenhüttl will NOT be impressed with the closing down from his side. The non-existent closing down I should say.

8: Close! Boufal, who was thought surplus to requirements, nearly makes the breakthrough from the edge of the box, but his angled effort flies wide of the post.

The Morocco international then tries his luck with a Paolo Di Canio-esque scissor kick. It didn’t go well.

5: Ralph Hasenhüttl said his side had recovered their self-confidence – and it certainly shows. Southampton are pressing high and aren’t giving Manchester United a second to settle. Everything’s been in the visitors’ territory so far.

3: Quite like how Southampton started from kick-off. They lined up three players on the left channel, who proceeded to bomb it down the flank. Kind of like a drop-kick in a rugby match.

The ball was pumped high to the left but Harry Maguire and that enormous head of his was there to head clear.

SOUTHAMPTON 0-0 MANCHESTER UNITED

1: And we’re underway folks! Southampton haven’t beaten United at home since 2003 – will that change today? We’re about to find out!

Ah, Martin Keown on commentary. Great news…

That kit…

12:28: Manchester United are wearing their black away strip today. It gets the nod from me, folks. Quite stylish actually. I’m duty-bound to inform you that Mike Dean is the referee. Always an exciting addition to any fixture…

Five-minute warning

12:25: Nearly underway at St Mary’s folks. And tradition dictates that I’ll now be accepting your predictions…

I’ll go first – I think we’re going to see a rather drab 1-1 draw. I know I’m supposed to hype this one up but I just get the feeling both sides would be content with a point.

As usual – I’ll delete this the moment I’m wrong.

‘I like the way they set up’

12:20: Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer: “I must say I have watched Southampton a few times and I like the way they are set up. They are aggressive and put you on the back foot.

“Jesse Lingard – well, Juan Mata is in his position today. He has been champing at the bit. Jesse has done well this season.

“We have seen a few players go to Italy this week, it was the right decision for the boys and for us, Alexis Sanchez and Chris Smalling needed to play and Matteo Darmian has been looking to go back for a while.”

So…

12:15: I have ONE day off and Chris Smalling leaves to join Roma?!

What the heck happened there?! The Serie A side will pay £2.7million to keep the player for a year.

Is that a good idea? Surely he’s more useful than Eric Bailly (long-term injury), Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Axel Tuanzebe?

Europa League draw

12:10: What do you guys think of Manchester United’s Europa League draw? Looks tricky if you ask me.

The Red Devils face a couple of long-distance midweek trips after being drawn in a Europa League group with Astana of Kazakhstan, Partizan Belgrade and AZ Alkmaar.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team are set to play in Group L and their away clash with Astana will see United make a 6,000 mile round trip to Nur-Sultan.

Twitter reaction

Jack: Ole keeps talking up Greenwood as the reason he can afford others to leave but we are short on strikers yet Greenwood still on the bench, he should put his money where his mouth is.

Francesca: Ole finally got Lingard off the starting 11, but still no Mason Greenwood or Chong, cmon give them a chance.

Rahman: One young player who’s not getting a chance at all is Angel Gomes. Played last night so already knew he wouldn’t be involved today but I just don’t get it. With our lack of creativity I seriously don’t understand why he’s not getting a chance.

What’s on

12:00: It’s a bloomin’ busy day of Premier League action. And, unfortunately, that’s because we’ve got the first international break of the season coming up.

I usually just go into hibernation for 12 days.

Anyway, we’ve got eight matches coming up and the fixtures are as follows:

Chelsea vs Sheffield United, Crystal Palace vs Aston Villa, Leicester vs Bournemouth, Manchester City vs Brighton, Newcastle vs Watford, West Ham vs Norwich and Burnley vs Liverpool.

If you’re looking for an accy – I’d plump for Watford, West Ham and Crystal Palace. tasty.

We’re back!

11:50: Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl: “The self-confidence is back and it is a pity we have some injuries from the Carabao Cup. It is a chance for others. We must work in a different way with the likes of Nathan (Redmond) missing. I hope they are not too long out.

“The key is always our work without the ball and organisation against a good team. We will try to be committed today.”

Team news – Manchester United

11:45: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer makes three changes from the side defeated by Crystal Palace.

Ashley Young, Juan Mata and Andreas Pereira are all in the starting XI. They replace the injured pair Luke Shaw and Anthony Martial, while Jesse Lingard is on the bench.

Young Mason Greenwood on the bench again – and likely to get some minutes at some point.

Team news – Southampton

11:40: Ralph Hasenhüttl, whose name I still copy and paste, makes two changes to the side that beat Brighton last weekend.

Sofiane Boufal replaces the injured Nathan Redmond while Cedric is preferred to Jan Valery at right-back.

There’s no Ryan Bertrand in the matchday squad. Moussa Djenepo is injured and Hasenhüttl (again, copy and pasted) decides not to risk Michael Obafemi (cramp) given his recent hamstring issues.

Aryan: Ashley Young got dropped and came back as team captain. More resiliency than Rocky Balboa.

Laurie: Ashley Young is starting and captaining Manchester United in his ninth season at the club. How did he even get a new deal?

Ola: Ashley Young, Captain, Leader, Legend.

Ashley Young returning to the side as captain has certainly got people talking. Not too many positives…

King Eric

11:25: I can’t start without discussing Eric Cantona, right?

Where do we start. Firstly his decision to attend the Champions League draw in Monaco with an un-ironed red shirt and a flat cap was simply wonderful.

Then, he delivered perhaps the greatest acceptance speech in history when being handed the UEFA President’s Award.

For anyone living under a rock, here’s what he said.

“As flies to wanton boys we are for the gods, they kill us for their sport,” he said. “Soon the science will not only be able to slow down the ageing of the cells, soon the science will fix the cells to the state and so we will become eternal.

“Only accidents, crimes, wars, will still kill us but unfortunately, crimes, wars, will multiply. I love football. Thank you.”

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo looked completely stumped.

Morning…

11:20: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the Premier League.

We’re on the south coast today as Manchester United travel to Southampton for the early fixture.

It’s been a difficult week for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side having drawn with Wolves and lost to Crystal Palace – but St Mary’s could prove a perfect tonic.

In all competitions, Manchester United have won more away games at St. Mary’s against Southampton than any other side.

Quite a nice record, but what do annoying, motivational people say? Records are made to be broken. Or is that rules? Who cares – let’s have the team news.

SOUTHAMPTON vs MANCHESTER UNITED – TEAM NEWS

Southampton will be without injured wingers Nathan Redmond and Moussa Djenepo for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Manchester United.

Redmond could be sidelined for up to three weeks after suffering an ankle injury in the midweek Carabao Cup win at Fulham, while summer signing Djenepo sustained a muscle problem in that match.

Striker Michael Obafemi, who scored the winner at Craven Cottage, is doubtful because of cramp. Left-back Ryan Bertrand (ankle) has returned to training and will be assessed.

Manchester United duo Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw have been ruled out of the trip to the south coast.

Martial sustained a thigh complaint in the loss to Crystal Palace, while Shaw pulled up with a hamstring issue that is likely to keep him out for a further four weeks.

Eric Bailly, Diogo Dalot and Timothy Fosu-Mensah are others absent through injury, while Chris Smalling is set to join Roma and Matteo Darmian is also potentially leaving.
