Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum: Jurassic Park original cast back for new film | Ents & Arts News

The original stars of Jurassic Park are reuniting for the series’ next instalment.

Sam Neill and Laura Dern will join Jeff Goldblum in the franchise’s next film, currently titled Jurassic World 3, which is slated for release in June 2021.

The three led the cast in 1993’s Jurassic Park, directed by Steven Spielberg, while Goldblum also appeared in 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

Dern, who plays paleobotanist Ellie Degler, joined the film’s director Colin Trevorrow on stage at an event in Hollywood to announce her return to the franchise. She last appeared, briefly, in 2001’s Jurassic Park III.

“Loved joining my buddy, Colin, to announce the return of the original cast of Jurassic Park back into the Jurassic World,” Dern said on Instagram, tagging Neill and Goldblum in her post.

Dern previously spoke of the potential for Ellie Degler’s return to the Jurassic Park universe, saying she saw the scientist as a feminist character:

She told Deadline: “I loved Ellie. I feel the proudest that a feminist, sassy, take-no-prisoners energy, who was integral to the storyline in saving the day, was honoured.

“I’ve had so many kids – boys and girls – for a couple decades now, come up to me saying, ‘I became a palaeontologist because of you’. And I love that it’s boys and girls.”

Reese Witherspoon, Dern’s co-star in Wild and Big Little Lies, tweeted her excitement at the news:

“I love every #JurassicWorld movie but now THIS?!?” she wrote.

“@LauraDern, #SamNeill, @JeffGoldblum are back! ?Can I buy tix now ?”

Neill, Dern and Goldblum are due to appear in Jurassic World 3 alongside Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt, who have led the last two films in the series.

Jurassic Park was originally a novel written by Michael Crichton. The first film grossed more than $1bn and won three Oscars.
