Russian defence sources said the soldier went on the rampage at a military garrison in the Gorny restricted-access locality of  Ulyotovsky in the country’s far eastern Trans-Baikal Region. A source said: “At least seven people were killed and there are wounded persons.”

A Russian Defence Ministry spokesman said the soldier who opened fire had been apprehended.

The spokesman said: “At 6.20pm local time on October 25, a serviceman of the repair and maintenance base stationed on the territory of the Trans-Baikal Region opened fire against his fellow servicemen during a change of the guard.

“As a result, eight servicemen were killed on the spot while two others received wounds of various severity.

“The soldier who opened fire was detained.”

There was no official information on why the soldier, believed to be a conscript, turned his gun on his colleagues but Russian news agency Interfax quotes sources as saying he was “suffering a nervous breakdown”.
