Russia threat: US B-2 bombers arrive in the UK after latest Russian jet incident | UK | News

The B-2 bomber is known is the US’s only aircraft capable of dropping huge earth-penetrating bombs. US Strategic Command tweeted: “In the very early morning hours, three B-2 Stealth Bombers arrived @RAF_Fairford as part of a @US_Stratcom #BomberTaskForce mission. “These missions strengthen ties with critical #allies, enhance #readiness and reinforce #deterrence.”

A press release issued earlier by US European Command (EUCOM) said: “A Bomber Task Force deployment of B-2 Spirit stealth bomber aircraft, Airman and support equipment from the 509th Bomb Wing, Whiteman Air Force Base, Mo., have arrived in the US European Command area of responsibility for a deployment to conduct theatre integration and flying training.

“The aircraft will operate out of RAF Fairford, England”.

The statement explained that the B-2s would take part in allied training in Europe in order to “improve bomber interoperability”.

It added: “Training with partners, allied nations and other US Air Force units contributes to our readiness and enables us to build enduring and strategic relationships necessary to confront a broad range of global challenges.”

It is not immediately clear how long the planes will remain stationed at the base.

The arrival of the bombers will send a signal to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin just days after RAF Typhoon fight jets were scrambled to intercept Russian aircraft approaching British airspace earlier this month.

The Royal Air Force said the jets were dispatched after two Tupolve Tu-142 Bear bombers were spotted approaching UK airspace.

Defence Secretary Ben Wallace said Russia was “determined to push international norms and to test the UK’s resolve”.

He said: “Every day certain states are determined to push international norms and to test the UK’s resolve.

“The threats to the international rules based system are on many fronts.

“The RAF is well equipped to stand sentry alongside our allies on the UK’s and Europe’s borders.

“I am grateful they are there 24/7 to uphold the UK’s commitment to our security.”

An RAF spokeswoman added: “RAF quick reaction alert Typhoon aircraft from RAF Lossiemouth scrambled to monitor two Tu-142 Russian Military Bear (F & J) long range maritime reconnaissance aircraft while they were in the UK area of interest.

“At no point did the Russian aircraft enter UK territorial airspace.”
