Russia news: Fears of new Chernobyl after Doomsday weapon leaks 1000x radiation | World | News

The man, who was one of several victims of a mystery blast in the White Sea on August 8, suffered “acute radiation syndrome” and his skin was left riddled with radionuclides. Russia’s security service, the FSB, is alleged to have destroyed reports on most of the victims. But media outlet Newsreader has revealed a leaked report on the diver which says he was blasted with 30,000 gray, the unit which measures the amount of absorbed radiation energy.

According to the leak, the dose was “one thousand times higher” than the amount of radiation which has the potential to kill a person.

The man, who is not named in the report, also suffered leg wounds. and his skin was found to have been “contamination with radionuclides” which also began to build up within his body.

The man was treated by doctors in a hospital in the nearby city of Arkhangelsk but later died while being transported to Moscow.

A brief rise in radiation levels in the wake of the accident was reported in the nearby city of Severodvinsk.

Norway’s nuclear test-ban monitor said on Friday that a second explosion occurred just two hours after the accident which may have caused the spike in radiation.

Russia’s state nuclear agency said the blast happened while a rocket was being tested on a sea platform that involved “isotope power sources”.

Photos emerged showing a badly damaged platform off the coast of Russia.

Moscow-based analyst, Yulia Latynina, said the weapon being tested at the time of the explosion was called the Burevestnik.

She dubbed it the “small flying Chernobyl” and said: “If it was the Burevestnik, then the inner parts of its nuclear reactor – or, most likely, the liquid flowing there – ended up outside.”

Writing in investigative newspaper Novaya Gazeta she said it was “just like the inner parts of the Chernobyl reactor which were thrown around the station’s territory by the explosion.”
