Royal news: Balmoral has become well-known for a heartbreaking reason – ‘Their hideout’ | Royal | News

It hasn’t always been a relaxing stay for the Royals as some of the biggest news stories to affect them have happened while they have been staying at Balmoral. Speaking on Yahoo UK’s ‘The Royal Box,’ The Sun’s former royal editor Duncan Larcombe said: “This is a place where some of the biggest events to affect the Royal Family have broken, whilst they’ve been there in this hideout.” One of the biggest scandals to rock the Royal Family was the the infamous photographs of Sarah Ferguson having her toes sucked by her financial advisor John Bryan.

The pair were snapped on a trip to Saint-Tropez in August 1992.

The Duchess of York had separated from Prince Andrew a few months before the scandal broke.

She was staying at the Balmoral with the Royal family when the pictures were first published.

Mr Larcombe said: “I can’t imagine what it would have been like for the Duchess of York, coming down to breakfast with her own picture on the front page of the papers.

“Quite a bit awkward isn’t it?

“God I would have loved to have been a fly-on-the-wall that morning.”

Fergie later wrote in her autobiography: “It would be accurate to report that the porridge was getting cold.

“Eyes wide and mouths ajar, the adults were flipping through the Daily Mirror.”

The scandal became known as “Squidgygate” after Mr Gilbery referred to Diana as “Squidgy” and “Squidge” during their phone call.

Later that year the Prime Minister at the time, John Major, announced the House of Commons that Diana and Charles would be separating.

In a Guilhall speech the Queen referred to 1992 as her “horrible year”.

Diana and Charles divorced in August 1996.

Five years later Princess Diana died in a car crash in Paris on August 31.

Prince William and Prince Harry, aged 15 and 12 at the time, were staying both their grandmother at Balmoral during the fateful day when they learned their mother had died.

The Queen was initially criticised for not returning to Buckingham Palace straight away.

She reportedly wanted to protect her grandchildren from the media to allow them to grieve in private.

During the summer of 2012 another scandal rocked the Royal Family during their Balmoral stay.

The Sun published naked photos of Prince Harry, 27 at the time, naked in a Las Vegas hotel room.

The images were released just weeks after he represented the Queen at the London Olympics closing ceremony.

Prince Andrew was visiting the Queen in Balmoral when news of his former friend Jeffrey Epstein’s death broke earlier this month.

He was found unresponsive in his New York jail cell while awaiting trial on charges of sex trafficking.
