Robert Mugabe dead: Zimbabwean president dies aged 95 in Singapore | World | News

Mr Mugabe died in Singapore, where he had received regular medical treatment in recent years. Zimbabwean President Emerson Mnangagwa announced the news on his official Twitter account. He said: “It is with the utmost sadness that I announce the passing on of Zimbabwe’s founding father and former President, Cde Robert Mugabe.”

Mr Mugabe ruled Zimbabwe for nearly four decades since independence from Britain in 1980 but was forced to resign in November 2017 after an army coup.

He was feted as an African liberation hero and champion of racial reconciliation when he first came to power in a nation divided by nearly a century of white colonial rule.

Details of his illness are not yet known. although the country’s Education Secretary, Fadzayi Mahere tweeted to release a statement of the news.

Mr Mahere said: “Rest In Peace, Robert Mugabe.

“My response to your passing is complicated. I’m going to write a long piece.

“However, for now, deepest condolences to his family.”

Mugabe began his political career as leading light in the quest for the country’s independence.

As a revolutionary fighter, he was jailed a political prisoner after fighting white-minority rule.
