Rafael Nadal thanks Daniil Medvedev for compliment then sends US Open final warning | Tennis | Sport

Rafael Nadal thanked Daniil Medvedev for his words of praise then fired a subtle warning at his US Open final opponent.

Nadal will play in his fifth US Open final on Sunday after outclassing Italian Matteo Berrettini.

A few hours before, Medvedev was the first man into the final after similarily being too good for Grigor Dimitrov.

And after the match, the Russian was asked to give his assessment on potentially playing Nadal.

He said: “Talking about Rafa, it’s tough to find words. So many players and so many people found them before me.

“He’s one of the greatest champions in the history of our sport.

“He’s just a machine, a beast on the court. The energy he’s showing is just amazing.

“To play him in your first Grand Slam final should be, I want to say, a funny thing. It’s not going to be a funny thing, but it’s going to be an amazing thing to live.”

Medvedev’s comments were then put to Nadal in his own press conference and while the Spaniard was thankful, he stressed the need for a beast-like performance in the final.

He said: “Just thanks for the compliment, no? Always is beautiful to hear nice things from your colleagues. Happy for that.

“Just I hope to be like this on Sunday. I will need it.”

Sunday will be Nadal’s 27th Grand Slam final of his decorated career, 18 of which have ended with the trophy in his hands and the 33-year-old says he won’t be happy unless he’s the winner again.

He said: “Before to play the final is not the moment to be super happy, no? Of course, finally when the tournament finish, if you lose, when you looking global perspective, okay.

“But now is a moment to enjoy today, but is a match in front on Sunday, an important one.

“I just focus on try to be 100% ready for it. But, of course, very, very happy for everything. Another final of the Grand Slam, and another final here in Flushing Meadows means a lot to me. So happy.”
