Rafael Nadal is like a ’tsunami’ as ATP Cup influence hailed by coach Francis Roig | Tennis | Sport

Rafael Nadal has been compared to a ’tsunami’ for the energy he is bringing to the Spain team at the ATP Cup. Nadal helped Spain get their tournament off to an ideal start when he beat Georgia’s Nikoloz Basilashvili on Saturday.

Spain take on Uruguay on Monday in their second group match with Nadal once again expected to play.

Having the world No 1 on the team is a great luxury for captain Francis Roig to have.

And Roig has given an insight into what it is like to have Nadal amongst the team.

“When Rafa comes there is an incredible energy, the ground almost shakes,” Roig told ATPTour.com.

“Just feeling his arrival, it seems like a tsunami is coming.

“It is true that then he talks a lot, explains and asks you [questions].”

In November, Nadal led Spain to victory in the Davis Cup and six weeks later he’s once again the lead player at the ATP Cup.

But the 33-year-old is reluctant to compare the two competitions and feels they should be viewed separately.

“We are happy, always proud to represent our country. We always happy to share moments between us that we are all very good friends since long time ago.

“We have fun on the weeks that we are able to be together, play like a team and like a country.

“Here is another opportunity to make it in a new and exciting competition.

“Let’s see if we are able to keep managing well the situation and to keep playing at our highest level to be successful.”
