Queen Elizabeth II wedding: Philip wedding behaviour showed he wouldn’t be ‘intimidated’

“There was no real sexual equality in the 50’s and a perfect, idealistic love match and marriage would involve innocence versus experience: the kind of match that women were reading about between the naïve, shy and nameless young heroine of the novel Rebecca and her suave and very adult husband Maxim de Winter.”

However, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh fit this romantic stereotype perfectly, the expert explained.

Judi went on: “The dashing, much decorated naval captain Philip and the young and rather girlish Elizabeth fitted this mold perfectly but with one glaring exception: as heir to the throne of England all the status and power lay with Elizabeth.

“The challenge as it was seen at the time was how an alpha male like Philip would fit into the role of consort from the lower ranks.”
