Princess Diana death: The four minutes before Paris crash unaccounted for by bodyguard | Royal | News

The news of Princess Diana’s death on August 31, 1997 shook the world as the People’s Princess died aged 36 after the car she was riding in crashed in Paris. On that night, the late Princess was in the rear seat of a Mercedes S280 limo with her lover Dodi Al-Fayed, driver Henri Paul and Trevor Rees-Jones, one member of Al-Fayed’s security team, on the front seats.

Mr Rees-Jones, who now goes by the name Trevor Rees, suffered tremendous injuries, but was the only person to survive the crash.

Princess Diana, Mr Al-Fayed and Mr Paul died despite the paramedics’ efforts to save them.

Mr Rees has been unable to recollect what happened on that tragic night between the moment he entered the car and the crash.

This has attracted towards him criticism and even made him the protagonist of conspiracy theories.

In an interview in 2000, he said: “I’m the only person who can tell people for real, and I can’t remember.

“It will be so easy if I do remember.

“I can tell people and all this c**p will finish.”

The “c**p” Mr Rees refers to is conspiracy theories about the car crash.

The crash took place less than five minutes after the car left the hotel.

The Mercedes, which had been followed by paparazzi trying to take a picture of Diana, crashed against the 13th pillar in the tunnel under the Pont d’Alma near the river Seine.

Eight years later, Mr Rees, who underwent 10 hours of surgery in the days following the crash, shared what he thought he could recall from night, but warned even he doubted his recollection.

He said: “I have a memory of stopping at traffic lights and seeing a motorcycle on the right-hand side of the car.

“I’m not sure about the other vehicles, but I can remember this motorcycle very clearly.

“My memory then is of total confusion.

“I don’t remember the pain but in my head there was a lot of confusion.

“I don’t remember if someone was holding me or attempting to give me treatment.

“I remember having heard somebody moaning and the name Dodi was uttered, but I don’t know who said it.

“On the other hand, if there was no one else there apart from us, I conclude that it was Princess Diana as it was a female voice.

“These memories are vague and I myself doubt them, but I’m mentioning them as these memories are coming back to me repeatedly.”

In the mid-200s during a Metropolitan Police investigation, Dr Maurice Lipsedge, a psychiatrist, also confirmed Mr Rees had suffered memory loss as a result of the crash.

Dr Lipsedge said: “Trevor Rees-Jones remembers getting into the Mercedes in the Rue Cambon and the car driving off, he remembers nothing after that.

“A few snatches might come back to him but his memories are not at all reliable because even for him it is impossible to tell if these are genuine memories or reconstructions of events from information he might have had later, dreams or imagination.”
