Christina, the sister of former Queen Beatrix, passed away this morning at the Noordeinde Palace in The Hague following a battle with bone cancer. King Willem-Alexander, Queen Maxima and Beatrix said they were “deeply saddened”.

The Dutch Royal House tweeted: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear sister and aunt.

“Christina had a striking personality and a warm heart.

“With her passion for music and her talent, she managed to touch a lot of people.

“We will cherish our many beautiful memories.”

The Dutch Royal House also shared a picture of Christina in a touching tribute on Instagram.

The posts on social media have prompted an outpouring of support from royal followers.

Christina was born in 1947 and she was the youngest of four daughters of the late Queen Juliana and her German-born husband Prince Bernhard.

She married Jorge Guillermo in 1975 and they had three children, Bernardo, Nicolas and Juliana.

He added: “A life dominated by family, her great love of music and development of young singing talent.”

Christina was born partially blind and her mother’s decision to seek help from a faith healer, Greet Hofmans, led to a royal crisis in the 1950s.

Greet’s influence over Juliana sparked speculation and rumours of a divorce from Bernhard.

However, the Dutch royals remained married.

Her remains will be taken to Fagel’s Garden Pavilion on the grounds of Noordeinde Palace, where friends and family will pay their last respects before a private cremation.

Christina was the youngest sister of Beatrix, who was Queen of the Netherlands for 33 years from 1980 to 2013 when she was succeeded by her eldest son, Willem-Alexander.
