Poland election result 2019: Polish nationalist party sweeps vote with absolute majority | World | News

The people of Poland took to the polls this Sunday for the country’s parliamentary election. Most of the results have now been counted, with the winning party scooping up nearly 44 percent of the vote.

The already incumbent Law and Justice party (PiS) has won a narrow majority in the lower house.

Since coming to power in 2015, the party has campaigned for the preservation of traditional Catholic values.

The party has gained support for its conservative policy, but also for social spending, allocating families a monthly allowance for every child.

PiS, a conservative nationalist party, beat its centrist rival, Civic Coalition (KO), who won around a quarter of the vote.

Prior to Sunday’s election, Poland has been at loggerheads with the EU.

The EU Commission announced they were referring Poland to the European court of justice.

Under Polish law, judges can be investigated and sanctioned for their rulings in court.

The European Commission said the law “did not guarantee the independence and impartiality of the disciplinary chamber of the supreme court.”
