Philippe Coutinho joins Bayern Munich on loan as Barcelona cut their losses on £142m flop | Football | Sport

The Brazilian superstar spent 18 months at the Nou Camp after leaving Liverpool in a £142million deal – becoming Barcelona’s all-time record signing.

After a summer of uncertainty over his future, Philippe Coutinho was left out of Barcelona’s squad to face Athletic Bilbao in the first La Liga game of the season on Friday.

Coutinho watched from the stands as Aritz Aduriz’s wonder goal sealed a shock victory for the hosts in the 89th minute.

After the game, Barcelona director of institutional relations Guillermo Amor told reporters in Bilbao that the deal was done.

“We can confirm that we have reached an agreement with Bayern Munich over the loan of Coutinho,” he stated.

The deal will be a one-year loan, with the option to buy next summer.

And Bayern’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic explained that the playmaker will be a valuable addition to his squad.

“There are still some issues pending such as the contract signature and the medical check but we have an agreement,” he said late on Friday.

“We are delighted to have brought him to Bayern.

“It is a one-year loan deal with an option to buy him for Bayern.

“He is a very versatile player who will surely give us a lot of options.”

Barcelona were keen to let Coutinho leave this summer after he failed to find his feet in Spain.

He reportedly turned down moves to Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal.

The Brazilian scored just 13 La Liga goals in 52 appearances over the past season-and-a-half, and bagged only 21 in all competitions.

Having set the Premier League ablaze with Liverpool, much was expected of the 27-year-old who joined the club as Neymar’s replacement.

But just a year-and-a-half after joining, Coutinho had already been offered up to PSG in a swap deal by Barca as they attempted to get their old striker back.

Instead, he will join a Bayern Munich side who were in desperate need of attacking reinforcements after missing out on Manchester City winger Leroy Sane.
