Novak Djokovic reveals positive injury update after ‘unbearable’ shoulder pain at US Open | Tennis | Sport

Novak Djokovic has told Serbian media that scans have revealed no damage to his shoulder after struggling with injury on Wednesday night.

Early in the first set of his match with Juan Ignacio Londero, Djokovic winced in pain after hitting two backhands and called for the trainer to provide treatment.

Djokovic was able to continue and won the opening set but after further massaging of his upper arm, found himself a double break down in the second set.

The world No 1 would ultimately fight back and complete a three-set win but he was downbeat about the injury after the match.

“It has caused hindrance to my game for sure tonight, especially with the serve and backhand,” he said.

“It was not easy to play with this kind of sensation, to be honest. I did not experience that too many times in my career.

“I was also lucky to find my way back in the second set and to win in the straight sets. I had obviously, you saw, a medical timeout. At changeovers, I tried to use within the rules as much as I can physiotherapy and medical help. That has definitely helped me stay in the match.

“The way it has started for me, especially midway through the first set, I didn’t know if I would be able to finish the match. I’m really glad I have.”

Djokovic told reporters he would speak to experts about his issue and the 24-year-old told Sportklub that the tests delivered positive results.

He said: “The pain was almost unbearable at some point, I felt pain while tossing the ball.

“I hope that we will be able to reduce the pain significantly so that I could play the third round.

“We did an ultrasound and the results had shown that there are no damages.

“I don’t believe that this can be a long-term issue. At least that is what the specialists say.

“This is uncomfortable because we are at a Slam, but we’ll find a way.”

Speaking on Amazon Prime, former British No 1 Greg Rusedski reckoned Djokovic can take solace from the fact the injury was not his playing arm.

He said: “Hopefully it’s just muscular. The nice thing about it, it’s on his left side, not his playing arm.

“Hopefully he can get some dry needling in there, get the muscles relaxed. If it’s not a tear or anything like that, I think he should be able to manage it.

“Most guys are dealing with injuries, aches and pains.

“It’s nice to see that he’s actually being honest about the situation because then it’s easier to cope with the situation.”
