North Korea threat: Kim Jong-un developing missiles to crash through defence systems | World | News

Tokyo has claimed Pyongyang is in the process of developing missiles to penetrate a ballistic warhead shield defending Japan. Japan’s defence chief has made the chilling claim while pointing to the irregular trajectories of the latest missiles launched by North Korea. Takeshi Iwaya told a news conference Japan believes the rockets were a new short-range ballistic missile, according to a ministry spokesman who confirmed his comments.

Recent short-range missile tests by Kim Jong-un have stoked alarm in neighbouring Japan even as US President Donald Trump has dismissed the launches as unimportant.

Saturday’s test firings came a day after Seoul said it was ending a military intelligence-sharing pact with Tokyo, amid a worsening spat over wartime forced labour.

Mr Iwaya and other Japanese officials called Seoul’s decision “irrational” as the threat posed by North Korea grows.

Japan and the United States have Aegis destroyers deployed in the Sea of Japan armed with interceptor missiles designed to destroy warheads in space.

Japan also plans to build two land-based Aegis batteries to bolster its ballistic missile shield.

Those defence systems, however, are designed to counter projectiles on regular and therefore, predictable, trajectories, and any variation in flight path would make interception trickier.

Detailed analysis of the latest North Korean launches was underway with the US, an official of South Korea’s defence ministry said today.

The news comes after President Trump was forced to apologise after claiming his wife, Melania, has “gotten to know” Kim Jong-un.

The statement from President Trump evoked a quizzical look from Melania as a camera cut to her sitting in the audience.

Confusions were aroused as Melania had not met Kim as she was not present for any of his and her husband’s meetings.

There is also no evidence that she has ever spoken to him.

The President and his wife left for Washington from the summit several hours later.

White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham then issued a statement to clear up any speculations on Melania and Kim.

The statement said: “President Trump confides in his wife on many issues including the detailed elements of his strong relationship with Chairman Kim.

“While the First Lady hasn’t met him, the President feels like she’s gotten to know him too.”

President Trump first met Kim when they travelled to summit in Singapore last year.

The leaders signed a joint statement pledging to move toward an enduring peace and the complete denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula.

It was followed by a second round of nuclear talks earlier this year that fell apart without a deal.

The US leader has teased the possibility of a third summit with Kim before next year’s US election.
