Michelle Obama news: FLOTUS revealed struggles of bringing up children in White House | World | News

The former First Lady claimed that as her and husband Barack were raising their children in the White House they had to “pretend like all the craziness around them wasn’t happening”. Michelle and Barack moved into the Presidential home in 2009 with their two daughters, Malia, 21, and Sasha, 18. She opened up in an interview with CBS’ Gayle King during the Essence Festival in New Orleans.

She told Ms King she used to say to her daughters: “Yep, yep, your dad’s president, that doesn’t have anything to do with you, just take your little butt to school.”

Michelle added during their time in office, her daughters were told to keep focus on where they were going and what they were doing as a result of their father’s role.

The 55-year-old added: “Our focus was to make sure they did what they needed to do.”

Michelle revealed in her hit book ‘Becoming’ about her grapple with maintaining a normal family life throughout Barack’s political career.

The 55-year-old described the struggles she went through as a full-time working mum trying to create family time for Barack and their two daughters.

She wrote: “I had no choice but to adjust to Barack’s absences anyway, because they weren’t slated to end.”

Illinois-born Michelle outlined how she finally had to stick to a bedtime routine and tell her husband he had to either show up or he would miss putting his children to bed.

Michelle went on to describe the reason the couple moved away from their Illinois home

Michelle told King she did appreciate some the elements of her daughters’ special upbringing in the White House.

The mother of two claimed she enjoyed the heightened security measure surrounding them.

She said: “Imagine having Malia and Sasha come to your house for a sleepover.

“This is the call: It’s like, ‘Hello. OK, we’re going to need your Social Security number, we’re going to need your date of birth.

“There are going to be men coming to sweep your house, if you have guns and drugs, just tell them yes because they are going to find them anyway.’”

She added: “’Don’t lie, they’re not going to take them, they just need to know where they are.

“And, uh, thank you for having Malia and Sasha over.

“Oh and by the way, there is going to be a man with a gun sitting outside all night, if you let him use the bathroom, that would be nice!'”
