Mexico El Chapo: Who is the son of El Chapo? Massive shootout erupts as police find infamo | World | News

Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán is a Mexican drug lord and the former leader of an international crime syndicate, the Sinaloa Cartel. He is considered to be the most powerful drug trafficker in the world and is thought to be worth more than $14billion (£10.9billion). But who is the son of El Chapo, Ovidio Guzmán López?

Heavy fighting broke out in northern Mexico after the security forces seized El Chapo’s son, Ovidio.

Security officers were surrounded by heavily armed cartel fighters after Ovidio was discovered inside a house in the Mexican city of Culiacan.

Officials said police came under attack and decided to retreat from the scene without Mr Guzmán in their custody in order to protect lives.

A lawyer for the Guzmán family said: “Ovidio is alive and free.”

Guzmán used distribution cells and long-range tunnels near borders which enabled him to export more drugs to the United States than any other trafficker in history.

He was ranked as one of the most powerful people in the world by Forbes between 2009 and 2013, with the Drug Enforcement Administration estimating his influence and wealth matched Pablo Escobar.

He was first captured in Guatemala in 1993 and was extradited and sentenced to 20 years in prison in Mexico for murder and drug trafficking.

He bribed prison guards and escaped from a federal maximum prison in 2001.

El Chapo was arrested again in Mexico in 2014 but escape prior to formal sentencing in 2015 through a tunnel under his jail cell.

He was recaptured in 2016 and extradited to the US a year later.

Earlier this year, he was found guilty of several criminal charges and was given a life sentence plus 30 years.

Who is El Chapo’s son?

While it is not known exactly how many children El Chapo has, it is estimated to be around 12 from at least three different wives.

Ovidio Guzman Lopez was found during a routine patrol of Culiacan.

Ovidio is on a number of wanted lists due to his links with the drug cartel and it is believed, he and some of his brothers, are still influential figures in the Sinaloa cartel despite the imprisonment of their father.

Guzman’s drugs cartel is believed to now be led by Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada alongside El Chapo’s sons – and have all been accused of distributing drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamine and marijuana.

Ovidio, 28, is one of four children from Chapo’s third marriage.

He is named together with his elder brother, Joaquín Guzmán López, in an indictment related to cocaine trafficking released by the US Department of Justice in February this year.

Jose Luis Gonzalez Meza, a lawyer for the Guzmans, told news network Milenio Ovidio had been in touch with the family and said he was free.
