Meghan Markle news: The one part of royal life which will ‘really get to’ Meghan Markle | Royal | News

Harry and Meghan met through a mutual friend in the summer of 2016, in London. They married after a whirlwind romance in May 2018, and had their first child a year later. They have attracted a great deal of attention due to the high-profile nature of the relationship – Meghan was a well-known actress in the US before she married in the Royal Family. She and Harry announced over the summer that they intend to set up their own charity called Sussex Royal – breaking away from the Royal Foundation charity which they shared with Kate and William – and are rumoured to be trying to make it an international organisation as they attempt to make their charity work more aligned with their interests.

In 2019 Channel 4 documentary, ‘Meghan and Harry – The Baby Years’, it compares Meghan’s marriage to Harry to that of Grace Kelly and the Prince of Monaco as both women had to give up their acting career before marrying into royalty.

Royal expert Hannah Bett said: “It was a sacrifice they both had to make: as a woman earning your own buck, you get a certain freedom to express yourself aesthetically, vocally.

“For Grace, it was the end of her acting career. For Meghan, it’s the end as her status as an independent woman, as now she has to think about what ‘the firm’ thinks of things.

“I certainly don’t think she will have considered extending her acting career, it not being of the Grace Kelly level. I think she’s rather happy to give that up.

“But the lack of autonomy will get to her, we see it getting to her.”

In a previous Hollywood interview, Meghan said: “I’m a California girl born and raised so the flip-flop culture is very much part of who I am. I love my cut-offs and flip flops and being as relaxed as can be.”

Being a member of the Royal Family means she will be living a markedly different lifestyle.

Royal expert Penny Junor said: “Marrying into the Royal Family is an absolute mixed blessing and some would say it’s a curse. It’s very difficult to fit into a life of discipline.

“It’s a life lived in a goldfish bowl. That was what was facing any bride for Harry.”

Ms Junor also said Harry was “bowled over by her physically” when they first met, but it was their shared interest in helping people and the fact they both came from “broken homes” which helped the pair forge a romantic bond.

She added that the “the fact that she was a star already probably made life a lot easier in terms of their future together”.

Prior to her marriage to Harry, Meghan was a UN Women’s Advocate and heavily involved with humanitarian work.

While she can continue to help charitable causes, she now has to organise it through the royal household.

Ms Bett said: “She’s already said a lot more than we are used to hearing from a newly mentored Duchess. Then they both very quickly moved to philanthropy as their particular area and toking at causes that they can actively help.”

In the documentary, royal editor of Hello magazine Emily Nash said: “She is so different to previous royal other. She is a divorcee, she’s American, she’s biracial, she’s had this acting career. She brought a whole new dimension of glamour to the Royal Family.

“She’s confident, which is crucial for this role.

“She has to go out and face the public no matter how she’s feeling inside.

“She needs to put her game face on.”

Ms Nikkhah said when Meghan made her first public appearance with Harry she made it clear that “I will do this my way, and I will wear ripped jeans if I want to” and it was apparently a “very managed moment”.

Ms Nikkhah added: “They were already setting the boundaries for their future relationship.”

Ms Junor explained: “Meghan is a very strong woman. And it was absolutely clear she wanted to be part of that interview.

“She wasn’t just going to be a little flower sitting beside her prince she was going to take part and quite clearly she does rule the roost.”

Meghan and Harry are currently on their first official royal tour as a family, having taken their four month old child Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor with them.

They will be in Southern Africa for ten day. It is rumoured that the royal couple are using the tour to try to expand their charity into an international trust.
