Man Utd transfer news: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer hints at midfield signings in January | Football | Sport

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted Manchester United are scouting midfielders ahead of the January transfer window.

The Red Devils are looking to strengthen centrally having endured a raft of injury problems this term.

Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic have all spent spells on the sidelines with fitness issues.

That has left Solskjaer with only Andreas Pereira and Fred as senior midfield options, with United having failed to replace Marouane Fellaini or Ander Herrera since their respective January and summer departures.

The Red Devils were eyeing a move for Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff in the summer, but baulked at the Magpies’ £50million valuation of the 22-year-old.

Bruno Fernandes was another midfielder linked, the Sporting Lisbon having maintained his fine form this term, with West Ham’s Declan Rice another whom United have long-term interest in.

Tottenham creator Christian Eriksen, meanwhile, has just six months left to run on his deal at White Hart Lane – though new Spurs boss Jose Mourinho will be keen to keep him out of former club United’s clutches.

Speaking ahead of United’s clash with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Sunday, Solskjaer said: ”Long-term, we’re looking at different positions and midfield, yeah, we have been looking at midfielders.

“There are always types of players we’re looking at but I’m not going to sit here and talk about that now.”

On the current state of his midfield, he added: “We lost Nemanja for a long period, of course that’s gonna take its toll for any midfield.

“If you take three midfielders out of any top club, I think they’ll struggle.

“But Fred’s stepped up and we’ll have to try to conjure up a way of replacing them.”

Midfield, ultimately, may be a position where United wait until the summer to strengthen, however.

A forward appears top of Solskjaer’s priority list, with the Evening Standard recently claiming all of Erling Braut Haaland, Timo Werner, Callum Wilson and Richarlison are targets for the Norwegian manager.

Speaking on his January plans a few months ago, the United boss indicated he only has ambitions to make minor tweaks to his squad in the winter window.

He told Sky Sports: “The money is there. We’ve been looking at players and we were close to a couple but it’s not right if you don’t get the right players.

“The money is there to strengthen in January and in the summer. We’re planning and we’re looking.

“We’re refining our targets, but just before the summer transfer window ended, the ready-made players weren’t there. But the resources are there if the right players are available.

“January is a difficult window, anyway. But if there are players available and at the right price, I’m sure we will spend. There might be some experienced players who can come in and help the younger players – that might be worth the money.

“So it depends on who is available. I’m not going to go down the route of bringing players in on big contracts and big fees if they’re not the right ones for the whole group and for the future.”
