Man Utd star Bruno Fernandes stopped Hannibal Mejbri being fast-tracked to first team | Football | Sport

Manchester United signing Bruno Fernandes in January stopped Hannibal Mejbri being fast-tracked to the first team, reports say. The 17-year-old has made a name for himself at youth level, shining ever since his move from Monaco back in the summer. And he could have already made his debut had the Red Devils not signed Fernandes in the New Year.

United spent the whole of January looking to sign Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon and, with days of the transfer window to go, they got their man.

The Portugal international joined in an initial £46million deal – although the fee could rise to as much as £68m should he meet certain clauses in his contract.

For a while, it looked as if United would miss out on the 25-year-old.

And the Manchester Evening News say that, during this time, the Red Devils contemplated fast-tracking Mejbri to the first team.

However, in the end, the signing of Fernandes meant the playmaker was to stay in the club’s academy set-up.

Mejbri has impressed for the Red Devils’ U18s side this season and is reportedly set to play more regularly for the U23s when football resumes again.

He’s managed six assists from a total of 18 appearances across all competitions this season and positive impressions from the club have emerged.

Mejbri is reportedly so good he ‘takes the p***’ out of team-mates in training due to his stunning work on the ball.

And Neil Ryan, a United coach, went on record to hail the teenager back in March.

“He comes with a high reputation, good player, lovely character, good kid,” he told the Evening Standard.

“He’s working very hard and like every young kid in the club, he is learning still and we are seeing some really positive things from him on the pitch.

While Mejbri is yet to play for the United first team, Fernandes has made an instant impact.

He failed to score on his debut against Wolves but was the brightest player on the pitch in a goalless draw at Old Trafford.

And in the time since then, Fernandes has been directly involved in six goals from seven matches.

He’s scored three – finding the net against Watford, Everton and Club Brugge.

And Fernandes has also managed three assists, including in big matches against the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City.
