Man Utd have Luke Shaw concern – a year after signing contract under Jose Mourinho | Football | Sport

It’s nearly a year to the day since Manchester United gave Luke Shaw a new contract, tying him at the club until June 2023 with an option of a further year.

When he penned the extension he stood alongside Jose Mourinho who, after two years of harsh treatment, was getting the best from the England international.

Shaw’s form for Manchester United has, however, been poor ever since that moment.

He’s solid enough defensively but doesn’t embrace the attacking side of the game in the same ways club stalwarts Denis Irwin and Patrice Evra did under Sir Alex Ferguson.

And Goal claim there is concern at United that Shaw lacks the mindset to take his game to the next level.

The 24-year-old has struggled for consistency ever since arriving from Southampton over five years ago.

In his first year of the club, he was often dropped by Louis van Gaal who was unhappy with his physique.

He won round the Dutchman in his second campaign at Old Trafford – but a horror injury sustained against PSV Eindhoven ended his season.

By the time he returned to action, Mourinho was at the helm.

But it took him two years to earn the trust of the Portuguese and he’s been a consistent pick for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer since the Norwegian took over.

Meanwhile, Mourinho recently hit out at Shaw while working as a pundit for Sky Sports.

And he also criticised Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford.

“They’re lacking maturity,” Mourinho said when asked about the struggles of his former club.

“For example, Luke Shaw. When I got here two years ago, the boy didn’t even know how to compete.

“Great potential, yes, but he doesn’t know how to compete.

“And when we talk about Luke Shaw, about Martial, about Lingard, about Marcus Rashford, we’re talking about boys with great potential but who still are lacking – a word I can’t say but you like to say a lot – having that [courage]. They’re lacking a bit of this.”

Shaw will miss United’s Europa League clash with AZ Alkmaar today (5.55pm).

The Red Devils will be aiming to make it two wins from two in Europe after being Astana 1-0 at Old Trafford last time out.

Mason Greenwood was the hero that day and the 18-year-old could start against the Red Devils’ Dutch opponents this evening.
