Man Utd face ‘massive’ problems in next games warns Jamie Carragher after Liverpool draw | Football | Sport

Manchester United have been warned they face real “tests” against Norwich and Bournemouth after having looked to turn a corner against Liverpool last weekend.

At least that’s the opinion of Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher, who thinks the Red Devils must prove the point against his former club was not a false dawn.

United went into the clash with north west rivals as major underdogs despite being the home team, having endured a woeful start to the season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

But United rose to the occasion against their arch-enemies, who had gone into the game on the back of 17 straight Premier League wins.

Marcus Rashford’s first-half strike, having been one of the best players on the pitch with a vibrant performance buzzing with intent, had looked set to give United a surprise victory over Liverpool before Adam Lallana’s 85th-minute equaliser.

But the performance was at least used by Solskjaer and his team as reason for major optimism moving forward, as United look to put a stuttering start to the campaign behind them.

United beat Partizan Belgrade 1-0 on Thursday night in the Europa League in a largely dull encounter and are still yet to score more than once in a game since they beat Chelsea 4-0 on August 11, a run of 12 games in which they have scored only once, if at all.

And Carragher has warned Solskjaer’s side that heading to Carrow Road on Sunday (4.30pm) and then taking on Bournemouth the following weekend – with a Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea sandwich in between – will pose them major tests, especially if they cannot muster more in front of goal.

“I think they’ll get better, of course they will,” the Sky Sports pundit said when asked about United. “The position they’re in now in the table, they won’t end up there, they’ll get better, of course.

“But I don’t think they’ll get top four. Leicester may get top six and you’re not quite sure who will miss out but certainly Man United are one of the big candidates, of the top six, to miss out with Leicester going strong.

“I think it was promising last week for Manchester United. I think first half they were excellent.

“But you can’t play like that, against the majority of teams they come against, United. They won’t have that type of atmosphere, that type of intensity. It was Liverpool, it was a derby game.

“Seeing United in the next couple of games, Norwich and Bournemouth, they’re tests for United.

“Are they good enough to go and open those teams up? They have a massive problem. They can’t score more than one goal in a game.

“That is a massive problem for them going forward, certainly in games like that.”

Carragher’s colleague and United legend Gary Neville concurred, saying: “I agree with Jamie, Norwich and Bournemouth are more likely to be the games that United will be judged on this season.

“You couldn’t be more confident going into the game against Norwich than you were against Liverpool because United let you down this season. West Ham, Southampton, other games of this nature, where they’ve just been really poor.

“Can those players get up for those games? Can they break them teams down that defend deep and counter on them?

“It’s a different type of test for them but I think it’s an important one. More important than the Liverpool one, in some ways.”
