M53 traffic latest: M53 closed in BOTH directions after fatal accident | UK | News

The M53 has been shut near junction 4 following the incident this morning. Motorists have been urged to avoid the area and the busy road is expected to be closed until later this afternoon.

North West Motorways Police tweeted: “Due to police incident on M53 at junction 4, both carriage ways are closed in area for foreseeable time, please avoid area.”

They later added: “Update on incident M53 junction 4, to confirm both carriageways still closed and will likely remain closed until at least mid afternoon, please avoid area as much as possible.”

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: ”We were contacted at 10.50am today to reports that a male had been in collision with an HGV on the Liverpool-bound carriageway of the M53 in Wirral.

“Officers attended at the scene at junction 4 of the motorway close to the sliproad for Clatterbridge. The male has been pronounced dead at the scene.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident, identity the male and inform the next of kin.

“The motorway has been closed between junctions 5 and 4 to allow for investigative work to be carried out and motorists are being asked to avoid the area and find alternative routes.

In a Twitter post the force added: “Please be aware that we are curently dealing with a Serious Incident between Junctions 5 and 4 on the M53 Northbound.

“Access to this route will be closed for a lengthy period, please find alternative routes.”

They tweeted: “Just a gentle reminder to road users who decide to use the hard shoulder to beat the queues on the M53 or decide to travel wrong direction on slip roads, Your details will be taken and will receive a court letter through the post, Decision is yours #bepatient.”

One motorist also hit out on Twitter at other drivers using the hard shoulder.

They posted: “That he’s shoulder all the impatient drivers on the #m53 are driving down to avoid sitting in a traffic jam…its there for the emergency services to attend to incidents…Like the one that’s caused the traffic jam..Sadly someone has died…Shame on you.”

Wirral University Teaching Hospital urged patients to allow extra time if travelling to Arrowe Park Hospital and Clatterbridge Hospital.

Meanwhile, Stagecoach warned of delays to their bus services.
