Liverpool 1-0 Leicester LIVE

  • Mane scores 50th PL goal in 100th league appearance for Liverpool
  • Jurgen Klopp looking for a win to keep the Reds top of the Premier League
  • Leicester head into match third in the table
  • Brendan Rodgers returning to Anfield where he was formerly manager

HALF-TIME: Liverpool 1-0 Leicester

44: Bit of argy-bargy. Adrian passes the ball to one of his defenders and, after doing so, is barged into by Vardy. The Spaniard isn’t happy about it and Vardy seems enthralled at the reaction he gets. The referee diffuses the situation.

43: Incredible that it’s 50 league goals in 100 appearances for Mane at Liverpool. He’s been superb this half in attack and defence. Almost bags another as Firmino cuts one back to him near the penalty spot but the man of the moment can open his foot enough and Schmeichel saves.

40: MANEEEE! Leicester’s line is high and Milner tries a ball round the back for Mane. The forward goes stride for stride with Evans, who sticks out a leg to intercept the ball but misses it. Mane opens up his body from the left side of the box and passes it into the bottom right corner.

38: Strong save! Adrian denies Soyuncu after the Turk heads powerfully towards goal from a clipped Chilwell free-kick. Turns out he was offside.

36: Ouch! Alexander-Arnold escapes at least a yellow card for a nasty scrape down Tielemans’ Achilles. It’s a poor, reaching challenge from the right-back, whose studs pull down the heel of the Belgian. VAR checks it but says no red card it required.

33: Chance for Firmino! Alexander-Arnold again the (almost) provider as he curls a sumptuous ball from deep and finds Firmino at the back post. The Brazilian stretches for the ball but his poke goes wide.

30: Uncharacteristically poor finish from Mane. The Senegal forward picks up the ball with Pereira out of position and runs towards that hole in defence only to pull the trigger from outside the box on his left peg, hitting it straight at Schmeichel.

27: Thumping tackle from Mane to end a sustained bit of Leicester pressure. So well-timed, Aaron Wan-Bissaka-esque.

25: Terrific work from Dennis Praet as he – wait for it – outworks the trademark workman Milner to earn a corner. Maddison’s whip comes to nothing but the Foxes do get another corner.

24: Tielemans gets lucky as he dribbles aimlessly into his own box only for Mane to clip him from behind. Still waiting for this one to come alive.

20: Vardy really is feeding off scraps up top. Despite trying to pin himself on Lovren, there is no support nearby him and Van Dijk is therefore able to double up on the England forward.

17: Important interception from Lovren as Maddison almost carves open the Liverpool defence with an outside-of-the-boot ball to Vardy which would have put him straight through on goal.

13: Close! Milner has the best chance so far but sends it over the bar. Alexander-Arnold skips down the right wing and hangs up a ball to the back post which Milner runs onto. The midfielder appears to hit the ball into the ground and doesn’t test Schmeichel, though.

10: Recurring patterns of play. Liverpool come forward, try something ingenious to unlock a sturdy Leicester backline, lose it, and the away side punt the ball upfield without finding their target.

07: Leicester living dangerously here as Liverpool keep coming forward, with Rodgers’ side seemingly happy to sit back. Evans and Soyuncu have done well so far.

04: Schmeichel denies Salah early on as the Egyptian cuts inside and unleashes an effort in the box. Half-chance, but the first of this game nonetheless.

02: Timid start to the game with Leicester trying a few balls over the top of the Liverpool defence, but the Reds deal with it well.

01: We are underway at Anfield!

2.55pm: We’re minutes away, the vocal chords are getting in check, the tannoys are ready to belt out YNWA. It’s all very Anfield-y. Let’s do this.

2.50pm: Final thoughts

Alan Shearer will be keeping a close eye on this from BBC Studios before Match of the Day this evening and believes Leicester have to throw what they can at the Reds.

“Liverpool have given away far more chances this season than they did last season so that has to give Leicester encouragement,” he said.

“I am pretty sure there will be goals today but with Liverpool’s top three you can only see a Liverpool win.

“Leicester are a very good side and they must believe that they have a heck of a chance to get into the top four this season.”

2.40pm: Klopp thinks Leicester is a tougher opponent than Man City…

Writing in the matchday programme, Klopp showed his deep admiration for Leicester by claiming he could pick a more difficult fixture in the current Premier League climate.

“I honestly can’t think of a tougher opponent to face in this moment at Anfield and I know they will be very motivated,” said Klopp. “They’ve always done well against us since I’ve been here and now they are again on the upward trajectory.

“Aside from Brendan returning, it will also be great to see Kolo Toure again. What a guy. We didn’t work together that long but in the time we did, he gave me and the team absolutely everything.

“Both Brendan and Kolo, plus other members of his staff, will I’m sure be given a warm welcome back. Although for the game itself we press ‘pause’ on the friendship button.

2.30pm: Henderson’ gratitude

Henderson flourished under Brendan Rodgers after the Northern Irishman initially wanted to offload him from Anfield upon coming to the helm in 2012.

The midfielder has spoken of the warmth he will feel towards the away dugout this afternoon, saying: “There is little room for sentiment in football and today I have no doubt at all that the manager in the away dugout will have as much desire to win here as we all have in looking to beat his side.

“That said, it’s impossible to ignore the person, along with key staff members, returning to Anfield this afternoon for first time since they left Liverpool.

“For 90-plus minutes we are opponents, but the only way to describe Brendan Rodgers, Kolo Toure, Chris Davies and Glen Driscoll is as returning friends – and as people who did a lot to help not just this club as a whole but a number of individual players within it, myself included. I know they’ll get a warm welcome before and after the game.”

2.20pm: Five juicy stats (courtesy of the Opta boffins)

  • Liverpool’s current run of 16 consecutive league victories is the second-longest ever in English top-flight history, bettered only by Man City between August-December 2017 (18)
  • Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 43 home league games – Liverpool’s second-longest ever in top-flight history (Their previous best of 63 between February 1978-December 1980 was eventually ended by Leicester)
  • Since Brendan Rodgers was appointed Leicester manager, only Liverpool (49) and Manchester City (46) have won more Premier League points than the Foxes (31)
  • Jamie Vardy has scored seven Premier League goals against Liverpool – only Andrew Cole (11) and Thierry Henry (8) have scored more against the Reds in the competition
  • If Sadio Mane scores, it will be his 50th Premier League goal for Liverpool in his 100th appearance for the club

2.10pm: Thoughts on the line-ups

Two changes for Liverpool from last week’s 1-0 win at Sheffield United as Lovren and Milner come in for Matip and Henderson. We knew Matip would miss today through a knee injury but Klopp has opted to overlook Gomez, intriguingly. As for Milner and Henderson, there’s not much difference between the two players and Klopp often switches up his midfield three.

It was clearly too early for Alisson to make it back into the team as he sits out this game despite hopes he could make it into the squad. Youth product Kelleher once again waits in the wings on the bench.

In the away dressing room, a big boost for Rodgers as he brings Maddison back into the line-up following a sore ankle last week. Perez makes way for the Englishman, who scored the winner in his last appearance against Tottenham.

2pm: Teams confirmed

Liverpool XI: Adrian, Alexander-Arnold, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Milner, Wijnaldum, Mane, Salah, Firmino

Subs: Kelleher, Keita, Gomez, Henderson, Lallana, Origi, Elliott

Leicester XI: Schmeichel, Pereira, Evans, Soyuncu, Chilwell, Barnes, Tielemans, Ndidi, Praet, Maddison, Vardy

Subs: Ward, Justin, Morgan, Gray, Albrighton, Perez, Choudhury

1.55pm: Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers has been talking about Liverpool and his time at the club ahead of the match.

He said: “I am the type of person who is happy for the club and especially happy for players like Jordan [Henderson] and James Milner – players I worked with and had a strong relationship with.

“I was so happy for Jordan when he lifted the Champions League trophy because I know how much he has developed and worked for it.

“I was never going to be bitter. That’s why I let Jurgen [Klopp] move into my house! I had a good relationship with Ray Haughan – the player liaison officer – and he told me Jurgen was struggling to find somewhere to live so I said, ‘Listen, I am moving to London for a bit and will not be there now, so Jurgen could move in’.”
