Kate Middleton & Prince William body language: Their ‘romantic’ display at Royal Variety

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, looked stunning in a full-length gown with black lace overlay by her favourite designer Alexander McQueen. Prince William looked sharp in a black tuxedo as they arrived at The London Palladium theatre for last night’s performance. Body language expert, Judi James, revealed that their body language “defines them as a true royal power couple.”

The body language expert said: “This couple’s body language does seem to define them as a true royal power couple here, with the evening at the Royal Variety looking almost like a romantic date night for the pair.

“Glam dressing seems to suit them, with William going into James Bond mode and Kate looking like a red carpet A-lister.

“Kate’s confidence signals have grown since the birth of Louis and here she appears to be slightly in the lead, taking the cheers from the crowds in her own right.”

Kate and William were photographed walking together through crowds of flashing lights and fans, and the royal pair appeared to be in good spirits on their rare romantic date night.

For a royal couple usually romance is kept in private, but it appears that last night they were able to let their hair down and enjoy each other’s company openly.

Judi said: “For a long-term married couple their connection signals [in the pictures] make them appear even more openly romantic together than usual.”

William kept close to Kate and often guided her gently in front of him through the building, showing off he is proud of his wife with rare public affection.

“William’s announcement hand gestures suggest he’s gently steering Kate to walk ahead with a sense of pride and admiration and his tactile behavior includes another affectionate back-touch with a splayed hand,” Judi explained.

However, their usual facade of proper royals is down and it is the look of love they constantly share as they look at one another during the event that makes it apparent that they are in a better relationship position than ever.

Judi said: “It’s their facial expressions as well as their mirroring and their intense and mutual attention rituals with one another that suggest they are also presenting as romantic royals as well though.

“Kate’s excited eye expression and her wide, dimpled smile suggest genuine, congruent pleasure at being in her husband’s company, while his beaming and at times slightly shy smile plus his softened features do suggest he’s very happily in love.

“They make you smile to see them, which is sadly not true of all the members of the royal family right now.”

As Kate and William entered the prestigious venue they waved to fans before being greeted by a young girl who handed the Duchess a gorgeous bouquet of flowers, while an adorable young boy dressed in a tuxedo handed William a book.

It had been reported that on the evening, Rod Stewart was expected to perform in front of Kate and William but was forced to pull out due to a sore throat.

Rod Stewart tweeted yesterday: “Due to a throat infection and on strict doctor’s orders I’m absolutely devastated to say I’m unable to perform at The Royal Variety Performance tonight, an amazing show which I love being part of.

“It’s going to be a great evening with some fantastic talent and I’m very disappointed that I can’t be there to give my support.”

They later stopped to speak to the cast of Mary Poppins, who performed on the evening. William asked the cast where they were performing and Zizi Strallen, who play Mary Poppins, told the royal the show is being performed at the Prince Edward Theatre.

William replied: “I love Mary Poppins!”

Petula Clark, British singer, and actress – who plays Bird Woman in the show – then told Kate she would have to bring the children to the show, and the Duchess replied: “They would love it.”

Kate, who is a mother to Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 1, told Petula that her children had wanted to come but she told them “not on a school night”, according to royal correspondent Rebecca English.

The evening was hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan who in their opening remarks joked William and Kate were on a “date night”.
