Italy volcano erupts: Lava pours down Stromboli volcano as smoke fills the air | World | News

Italy’s Stromboli volcano has erupted, spewing ash and lava into the air, cascading down the sides of the mountain. According to VolcanoDiscovery, an ash plume rose a few km, ejected bombs to the upper slopes of the volcano and caused a pyroclastic flow that travelled down the Sciara into the sea. Activity had been very high during the past weeks and authorities had closed the summit area.

From webcam images, nothing very unusual could be seen in the minutes before, just a relatively strong (but not unusual) eruption from a vent in the northeastern crater at 11:55 local time.

Stromboli is just off the coast of the Italian island of Sicily and was heard giving a “loud roar” as it burst into life, according to Italian agency ANSA.

In the eastern shore area of the island (Scari), centimetre-sized lapilli – or rock fragments – are falling.

The eastern and northeastern flanks of the mountain above the village of Stromboli have been hit by bombs of lava and rock, and bush fires are visible in areas down to approximately 250-300 m.

The area of the volcano makes up the entire Stromboli island, with only 500 people residing there.

There have been no reports of injuries or damage to buildings as of yet.

Stromboli is one of the most active volcanoes in the world and is known for its usually small but regular eruptions.

Often lava is thrown from vents inside the summit crater, and this activity has been ongoing for at least 2,000 years.

As long as there is written memory of the activity, it has been known to be constantly bubbling.

Lava fragments are often seen shooting out of the volcano, reaching 100-200m above the craters.

There are larger eruptions which can occur, the most violent of which have taken place in 1919, 1930 and most recently on April 5, 2013.

These eruptions have been large enough to kill and destroy homes.

This is a breaking story, more to follow
