Iran-US news: President Rouhani snubs talks with Trump unless sanctions are lifted | World | News

Over the last few months, the two states have come close to conflict following a series of skirmishes, including the downing of a US drone over Iranian airspace. Such was the discontent between the two countries, US President Trump even admitted that Washington was ready to conduct a missile strike on Iran.

Only as a result of the number of losses that would be incurred, did Trump halt the strike.

With tensions threatening to escalate further, Trump recently raised the opportunity of meeting Rouhani at the G7 Summit.

However, despite Trump’s seemingly complimentary remarks, Rouhani hit back and rejected any potential talks.

Speaking on Tuesday, Rouhani said: “We will not witness any positive development unless the United States abandons its sanctions and corrects the wrong path it has chosen.”

In support of the President, the Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javid Zarif called any potential peace talks as “unimaginable”.

Also speaking at the G7 Summit over the weekend, French President Emmanuel Macron has emerged as a potential mediator between the two countries.

In response to that, Mr Zarif said: “What American and French officials say concerns themselves.

“But I told them in Biarritz that no meeting will be held.”
