Iran news: Tehran accuses Washington think tank of ‘economic terrorism’ | World | News

The Iranian government said on Saturday that it has imposed sanctions on a US think tank called the Foundation for Defence of Democracies (FDD), according to Fox News. A statement from Tehran’s foreign ministry accused the FDD and its CEO Mark Dubowitz of “economic terrorism including spreading lies, lobbyism, propaganda against Iran”, according to Iranian media. Iran have accused the think tank because of its mission to expose human rights violations by the Tehran regime and advocate for harsher sanctions by the US.

State run news agency Mehr news wrote that the sanctions against the FDD were in line with Iranian law.

However, the sanctions will have little effect unless the target of the punishment actively uses the Iranian financial system.

The agency wrote: “Accordingly, taking any actions by the judicial and security apparatuses against the FDD and their Iranian and non-Iranian accomplices will be considered legitimate as their actions are against Iran’s national security and the interests of Iranian people and government.”

But the FDD defended their work on Twitter and condemned Iran for repressing its people.

The FDD said: “FDD conducts independent research and analysis on national security issues.

“The Islamic Republic prohibits such freedoms at home, and would like to do so abroad as well.

“The Islamic Republic, which has occupied the great nation of Iran for four decades, continues to brutally repress the peoples of Iran, stealing their wealth and creating destruction and chaos in the Middle East.

“FDD considers its inclusion on any list put out by the regime as a badge of honour and looks forward to the day when Americans and others can visit a free and democratic Iran.”

The US withdrew after concerns arose over Iran’s ballistic missile program and regional influence, which has severely crippled Iran’s economy.

The US has also re-imposed and created sanctions blocking Tehran from selling crude oil.

Iran has also been accused of supporting terrorist groups and activities in the Middle East through Hamas and Hezbollah.

It comes as the G7 summit continues this week with Iran at the top of the agenda for many world leaders.

French President Emmanuel Macron was appointed as the groups’ ambassador to Iran after a series of meetings between Paris and Tehran.

The meetings have sparked hope that a new treaty could be reached between Iran and the US.

However, Tehran has just revealed a new missile system which signals to Washington that Iran may be preparing for conflict.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani also said that negotiations with the US have been ineffective.

The mobile Bavar-373 system is intended to intercept and destroy incoming hostile targets.
