Iran navy chief makes shocking warning of potential war with Israel | World | News

His shocking statement came after reports of Israel thing part in a US-led mission to secure Western vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The strait, that runs between Iran, Oman and the United Arab Emirates, is one of the world’s most strategically important locations Iran recently seized several oil tankers amid escalating tensions following US sanctions on the Islamic Republic. In an interview to the Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Mayadeen television station in Lebanon, Tangsiri made the disturbing warning that “whenever our commanders wish so, they are able to detain any ship, even if it is accompanied by American and British forces.”

Last week, it was reported that Israel’s foreign minister, Israel Katz, had told a closed session of the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that Israel was involved in US-led efforts to provide maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Katz said that partnering with the US was in Israel’s strategic interests of countering Ira and boosting ties with Gulf countries.

This, combined with soaring tensions with the Us has made for a period of political volatility.

Tehran and Washington have been locked in a battle of nerves since Us President, Donald Trump, withdraw from the landmark 2015 clear deal.

The deal came after years of Iran’s alleged efforts to develop a nuclear weapon.

Though, Iran waved down any such claims, insisting that its nuclear programme was entirely peaceful.

Under the deal, Iran agreed to limit its sensitive nuclear activities and inspectors from around the world to probe its dealings, in return for the lifting of crippling economic sanctions.

Since Mr Trump removed the US from the deal, drones have been downed and tankers mysteriously attacked in Gulf waters.

The US and its Gulf allies have accused the Islamic Republic of the tanker attacks.

But, Tehran continues to deny any involvement.

In response, the US has launched its mission, Operation Sentinel, in an attempt to ensure complete freedom of navigation in the Gulf.

Last month, a British flagged vessel was captured by Iran, with images showing Iran’s Revolutionary Guards descending from a helicopter.
