Hurricane Dorian eye wall: How wide is Hurricane Dorian? How to watch hurricane live | World | News

Hurricane Dorian is a slow-moving storm currently spinning across the Atlantic Ocean with devastating consequences. The storm made landfall in the Bahamas this weekend and is suspended over the island nation, moving at 1mph with winds pushing 150mph. Some 15,000 homes lie destroyed in its wake, and the system is expected to remain in the area overnight. Once it departs the Bahamas, it is expected to tear into the US, starting with Florida and moving along the coast towards the Carolinas.

How wide is Hurricane Dorian?

Hurricane Dorian is one of the strongest storms in the Atlantic Ocean on record, and Donald Trump has hailed it “one of the largest hurricanes ever”.

The NOAA has downgraded Dorian to a Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale, but it is still pounding the Bahamas, with some 30,000 people at risk.

The eye of Hurricane Dorian is in a constant state of flux, it once had two eyes, and is currently “wiggling”, with varying widths.

According to the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) which monitors weather threats in the US, the eye of Dorian measures at 17 miles in diameter.

The eye at the centre of a hurricane is generally calm, with sun and blue sky visible.

However, the immediate area around the outside, known as the eyewall, is where the most severe weather can occur, with extreme wind and rain.

Authorities have recently warned those caught in Hurricane Dorian not to take footage, given the extreme danger posed by winds around the outside of the eye.

The National Hurricane Centre (NHC) has urged people not to go out during calm periods of Hurricane Dorian, as the storm is highly unpredictable.

They said via Twitter: “We have seen videos in the Abacos (Bahamas) of people venturing out in the eye of #Dorian.

“Everyone should take shelter immediately as winds will increase rapidly and unpredictably after the eye passes.”

For those who want to see what Hurricane Dorian looks like from within, it is possible to do so from home.

Can you watch Hurricane Dorian live?

YouTube channel Surfline has curated a selection of live cameras from where people can watch the storm, located in different parts of Florida.

People who want to see the storm in all its glory can watch some of NASA’s videos, which show the hurricane from space.

For those who want to see what might be to come for Florida shortly, Delray Beach in Palm Beach County – which is on the outskirts of the arriving hurricane – is currently streaming a live feed.
