Greta Thunberg told to ‘give it a rest’ by Australian Karl Stefanovic | World | News

Australian TV presenter Karl Stefanovic tore into 16-year-old Ms Thunberg over her passionate speech at the UN headquarters in New York. Ms Thunberg told the assembly that delegates had “stolen” her dreams and childhood “with your empty words”. The Swedish activist said: “We are in mass extinction. And all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!’

After her speech, former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd backed Ms Thunberg, telling ABC: “I think she represents the anger of that generation.”

But Mr Stefanovic, a former host of the Today show, ripped into the activist and said she should “give it a rest”.

While hosting the 2GB radio station on Tuesday afternoon, the outspoken presenter said: “She’s being managed and her stance is being used by activists. She was very fired up, wasn’t she?

“I thought “what are my kids doing on school holidays next week?” Not doing that.”

Continuing in his rant, Mr Stefanovic admitted he was angered by Ms Thunberg’s speech.

He said: “I’ll tell you what, I’m an incensed middle-aged white guy this afternoon.’

“Kevin Rudd, give it a rest. There’s anger out there – but there’s anger at this kind of activism as well.”

Continuing, he took a stab at the former Australian leader, saying: “I can’t believe he would go and say that. Actually, I can believe it – it’s Kevin Rudd.”

“I don’t think it’s fair on her.

“Wouldn’t you rather have grown-ups dealing with facts than a young person getting carried away?”

Ms Thunberg’s speech at the UN conference was criticised by a host of figures.

Football personality Sam Newman labelled her an “annoying little brat’ in a scathing Twitter post.

He tweeted: “This annoying little brat addressed the UN on the so-called climate crisis.

“Who lets this s*** have a platform? Mendacious, inbred sycophants, that’s who.”

And firebrand US President Donald Trump also took aim at the Swedish activist, who suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome.

Mr Trump sarcastically wrote: “‘She seems like a very happy young girl looking forward to a bright and wonderful future. So nice to see!”

The teenage activist was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize after her demonstrations outside the Swedish Parliament sparked climate protests in the country,

During her speech, Ms Thunberg angrily told the Assembly: “This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be standing here. I should be back in school on the other side of the ocean. Yet you all come to me for hope? How dare you! You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words. And yet I’m one of the lucky ones. People are suffering. People are dying.

“Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are at the beginning of mass extinction. And all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you!

“For more than 30 years the science has been crystal clear. How dare you continue to look away, and come here saying that you are doing enough when the politics and solutions needed are still nowhere in sight.

“You say you ‘hear’ us and that you understand the urgency. But no matter how sad and angry I am, I don’t want to believe that. Because if you fully understood the situation and still kept on failing to act, then you would be evil. And I refuse to believe that.”
