George RR Martin admits ‘Game of Thrones was NOT completely faithful’ | Books | Entertainment

The final season of Game of Thrones split the fans, while critics reviewed the series as the worst of the show. To be fair to HBO and the showrunners, author George RR Martin hadn’t finished A Song of Ice and Fire, so they had little source material to go on but his major plot points. Now in a new interview with Fast Company, the 71-year-old has opened up about the trauma of TV adaptations and the final season of Game of Thrones lacking faithfulness to his vision. Martin said: “It can be… traumatic.”

The author continued: “Because sometimes their creative vision and your creative vision don’t match.

“And you get the famous creative differences thing – that leads to a lot of conflict.

“You get totally extraneous things like the studio or the network weighing in, and they have some particular thing that has nothing to do with story, but relates to ‘Well this character has a very high Q Rating so let’s give him a lot more stuff to do’.”

“The [final] series has been… not completely faithful.

“Otherwise, it would have to run another five seasons.”

Martin has previously revealed how A Song of Ice and Fire’s ending with differ from Game of Thrones.

Before the final season aired, Martin told 60 Minutes: “I don’t think [Game of Thrones show-runners] Dan and Dave’s ending is gonna be that different from my ending because of the conversations we did have.

“We’re talking here about several days of story conferences taking place in my home in Santa Fe, New Mexico.”

“But there’s no way to get in all the detail, all the minor characters, all the secondary characters.

“The series has been extremely faithful compared to 97% of all television and movie adaptations of literary properties.

“But it’s not completely faithful. And it can’t be. Otherwise, it would have to run another five seasons.”

Meanwhile, Martin has revealed his writing order for after he completes The Winds of Winter.

The latter is expected to release by next summer, according to the author’s own personal deadline.

Next up will be a fourth Dunk & Egg story, followed by A Song of Ice and Fire conclusion A Dream of Spring.

After that, he’ll pen a fifth Dunk & Egg adventure before tackling Fire and Blood volume 2.

How long this will take though is anyone’s guess.
