Frankie & Benny’s news: Closures in ‘large number’ of UK restaurants amid coronavirus

Frankie & Benny’s, will close a “large number” of branches, according to reports. This follows the impact of the coronavirus crisis as all restaurants were asked to close.

Like many restaurant chains, Frankie & Benny’s branches have been temporarily closed as a result of the coronavirus crisis.

However, a large number of the branches that shut will not reopen, according to an email sent by the owner, the Restaurant Group.

An email sent to staff by bosses explained many branches are “no longer viable to trade and will remain closed permanently.”

It is thought the list of branches closing will be revealed to staff today.

The restaurant chain has 236 locations across the UK that could be affected by the closures.

There are branches in locations including in London, Manchester, Leeds, Cardiff, Glasgow and Newcastle.

The email regarding the closures was sent by the Restaurant Group, who also own the chains Wagamama and Chiquito.

In March this year, Frankie & Benny’s closed doors as the government asked all restaurants to stop serving.

This was in line with the coronavirus lockdown where Britons were asked to stay indoors as much as possible.

While restaurants were allowed to stay open for delivery, Frankie & Benny’s branches closed completely.

The email explaining the closures was sent to managers in the group’s Leisure Division.

It said: “The Covid-19 crisis has significantly impacted our ability to trade profitably, so we’ve taken the tough decision to close these restaurants now.”

It also made clear that any closures are likely to result in job losses to some degree.

Many members of staff at the Restaurant Group are currently on the government’s furlough scheme.

The message continued: “Unfortunately, unless there are any suitable alternative roles identified, it’s likely your role will be made redundant.”

At the start of the year, it was announced up to 90 Frankie and Benny’s and Chiquito restaurants in the UK would close.

The Restaurant Group said a minimum of 31 leisure sites would not have their contracts renewed.

Since then, it seems more closures have been put into place as Chiquito entered administration in March.

The Restaurant Group said 61 out of 80 branches would stay permanently closed.
