EU news: Tusk issues Trump warning with G7 warning on trade war – ‘We stand with France’ | World | News

EU Council President Donald Tusk made the remarks at the G7’s opening press conference on Saturday morning. Mr Trump yesterday threatened to tax French wine “like they’ve never seen before” in response to a French proposal to levy a tax aimed at big US technology companies. But today Mr Tusk unequivocally said: “I will protect French wine with genuine determination.

“Trade deals and reform of WTO are better than trade wars which leads to recession.

“Trade wars within the G7 members will lead to eroding trust.”

This month Bloomberg reported that Trump had floated the idea of going as far as putting a 100% tax on French wines at a business roundtable in the Hamptons.

Trump is teetotal but he recently told reporters he had “always liked American wines better than French wines even though I don’t drink”.

He explained: “I just like the way they look.”

His tweets prompted the inevitable joke in France: “Make America grape again.”

France is a major wine-producing nation and the US is its biggest export market in value terms, accounting for 18 percent of French wine exports and worth €1.7bn (£1.5bn), up almost a third over the past five years.

Wine is a crucial part of France’s identity and economy – its second-biggest export after aerospace in value terms.
