Donald Trump news: President claims he’s building wall in Colorado – 400 MILES from Mexico | World | News

The US President’s bizarre gaffe came after the Republican-controlled Senate’s failure last week to overturn the national emergency declaration the White House has used to help fund construction of the wall on the US-Mexico border. He told an audience in Pittsburgh: “We’re building a wall on the border of New Mexico. And we’re building a wall in Colorado.”

But Colorado, is located directly north of New Mexico but is nowhere near the US-Mexico border.

He continued: “We’re building a beautiful wall. A big one that really works that you can’t get over, you can’t get under.”

He said: ”We’re building a wall in Texas. And we’re not building a wall in Kansas, but they get the benefit of the walls that we just mentioned.”

Colorado’s Democrat Governior Jared Polis responded to Mr Trump’s remarks on Twitter.

He said: “Well this is awkward. Colorado doesn’t border Mexico.

“Good thing Colorado now offers free full day kindergarten so our kids can learn basic geography.”

Mr Trump later said he made the Colorado comments “kiddingly” and added people living in the state would still benefit from the wall.

He said on Twitter: “(Kiddingly) We’re building a Wall in Colorado”(then stated, “we’re not building a Wall in Kansas but they get the benefit of the Wall we’re building on the Border”) refered to people in the very packed auditorium, from Colorado & Kansas, getting the benefit of the Border Wall!”

The US Supreme Court gave permission for the wall to be built in July at a cost of £2bn after Mr Trump imposed a record-long government shutdown due to Congress’ reluctance to approve funding for the project.

Mr Trump remains convinced that the wall will stop possible threats from the Mexican side of the border.

He visited a newly constructed section of the barrier last month and described it as “virtually impenetrable”.

Mr Trump added: “When the wall is built, it will be virtually impossible to come over illegally, and then we’re able to take border control and put them at points of entry.”

The construction of the wall along the US-Mexico border was one of Mr Trump’s key 2016 election pledges.
