Donald Trump news: How US President THREW starbursts at Angela Merkel during G7 | World | News

This weekend, US President Donald Trump is in the French coastal city of Biarritz for the 45th G7 summit, and will later visit Poland to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II. Given his proximity to Germany, many are wondering why a stopover with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin is not on the list. In over two years as President, Mr Trump has only met Ms Merkel in Germany once and never as her guest in Berlin.

Besides the political tensions between the two countries, including a rapidly brewing trade war, Mr Trump and Ms Merkel are not known for having particularly good chemistry when they do meet in person.

At the D-Day commemorations this summer, the US President did not even offer the Chancellor a handshake.

Moreover, at the last G7 summit in Charlevoix, Canada, tensions reached new heights – so much that Mr Trump threw starbursts sweets on the table while talking to Ms Merkel in sign of exasperation.

In a newly-resurfaced interview from 2018, Ian Bremmer, president of Eurasia Group, noted tensions flared between the world leaders when President Trump was pushed to sign the joint communiqué towards the end of the summit.

Commenting on the tense showdown, he said: “It was at this point, towards the end of the summit, that Chancellor Merkel of Germany and Prime Minister Trudeau of Canada got together with some of the allies and really wanted to press Trump directly to sign the communiqué, that talked about the commitment to a rules-based international order.

“Trump was sitting there with his arms crossed, clearly not liking the fact that they were ganging up on him.

“He eventually agreed and said OK he’ll sign it.”

Mr Bremmer noted President Trump lashed out at the world leaders and in particular targeted Chancellor Merkel.

He said: “And at that point, he stood up, put his hand in his pocket, his suit jacket pocket, and he took two Starburst candies out and threw them on the table.

“‘He said to Ms Merkel: ‘Here, Angela.

“‘Don’t say I never give you anything.’”

Commenting on the state of US-G7 relations, he concluded: “The relationship is about as dysfunctional as we’ve seen between America and its major allies since the transatlantic relationship really started after World War II.”

After feuding with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about trade, the US President ended up leaving last year’s G7 meeting early and withdrawing his support for the communique via a tweet.

To avoid a similar dispute, French President Emmanuel Macron said this year’s G7 meeting would end without a communiqué, abandoning a tradition held since the meetings began in 1975.
