Donald Trump latest: US President humiliated in ‘sick joke’ as approval ratings drop | World | News

The US President vented his anger by blaming the media coverage of his repeated racism for the drop in approval. In a series of Tweets on Sunday morning Trump attacked the New York Times (NYT), renewing his longstanding campaign to discredit news organisations which cover stories he does not approve of. He said: “The reporting is so false, biased and evil that it has now become a very sick joke.

“With all that this Administration has accomplished, think what my Poll Numbers would be if we had an honest Media, which we do not!”

The posts complain of “a racism witch hunt” as the newspapers shifted its focus from coverage of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation to his campaign’s links with Russia

In a Fox News poll published this week, Trumps disapproval rating climbed to 56 percent.

In further surveys from Fox News, Trump was found to be less popular among voters than Democrat presidential candidates Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren and Kamala Harris.

Trump gave no examples of stories from the NYT which he deemed part of the “racism witch hunt”.

It appeared he was reacting to staff being told by executive editor Dean Baquet he wanted them to “write more deeply about the country, race, and other divisions” following the end of Mr Mueller’s inquiry.

Trump’s recent racial attacks on four Democratic congresswomen have been reported by media outlets across the world.

He repeatedly told them to “go back” to their own countries, despite all being US citizens and all but one being born in the country.

The NYT faced criticism over its coverage of the remarks as unlike other publications it didn’t explicitly call out Trumps racism.

Mr Baquet held a staff meeting where employees reportedly asked him about the paper’s reluctance to call Trump “racist”.

In a transcript obtained by Slate, Mr Baquet said: “How do we cover a guy who makes these kinds of remarks? How do we cover the world’s reaction to him?

“How do we write about race in a thoughtful way, something we haven’t done in a large way in a long time?”
