Credit card fraud: Check to make before giving bank details online | Personal Finance | Finance


As Christmas approaches, it’s likely that many people will be ramping up the amount of purchases they make as they rush to buy presents for loved ones. Unfortunately however, financial fraud has risen by 14 percent this year, according to an analysis by Experian. The credit reference agency research found the overall rise has been largely driven by an increase in debit and credit card fraud, which is up 60 percent in the first six months of 2019, compared to the same period a year prior.

Using public or shared devices

There are many reasons why one may make a purchase on a public or shared device, but there is a warning which comes with doing so.

Moneyguru.com experts said: “Avoid entering your card details on a public or shared computer, as details can sometimes be saved automatically.

“If you don’t have access to a private computer or device, ensure you log off and request for the device to ‘forget’ the details before leaving.

“If you get a call offering a free gift, but they ask for your card details to pay for shipping for example, this is almost certainly a con.

“Never give away your card details over the phone, even your bank or building society won’t ask you for this information, so stay clear of the scammers!”

HMRC has also issued a warning about some tell-tale signs of a scam.

Writing on Twitter, the official HMRC account told members of the public: “We will never call you out of the blue threatening arrest, a lawsuit or offering a tax refund, or asking for information such as your name, credit card or bank details.

“This will be a #scam. Hang up and report the call to us,” the HMRC tweet read.
