Coco Gauff makes history as she wins first WTA singles title in Linz | Tennis | Sport

It was the first-ever meeting between Gauff and Ostapenko but the young American made a nerveless start, breaking to lead 4-2.

And she wrapped up the opening set 6-3 when a deep slice to the baseline drew the error from Ostapenko.

In the second set, Ostapenko brought the firepower she is known for but broke to lead 3-1 with a volley winner.

And the Latvian won the next three games to win the set 6-1 and force a deciding set for the title.

But Gauff blasted into a 4-0 lead courtesy of a double break as Ostapenko’s game unravelled.

In a lengthy sixth game of the set, Gauff had two Championship points on Ostapenko’s serve but failed to take them.

Ostapenko then got one of the breaks back and Gauff received coaching advice from her father, who said: “You’re not going to sprint to the finish line, we’re going to walk there.

“Take your mind to another place, to the practice court.”

In the next game, Gauff gave herself more Championship points and she got the job done to seal the victory.
