Bulgaria vs England LIVE: Line ups confirmed, Tyrone Mings debut, Southgate makes changes | Football | Sport

  • England’s loss to the Czech Republic ended a 43-match unbeaten run in qualifiers
  • Three Lions still top Group A and can qualify with victory over Bulgaria if third-placed Kosovo lose to Montenegro
  • Four points from their remaining three games will ensure the Three Lions’ place at Euro 2020
  • Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings is poised to get the nod ahead of Liverpool’s Joe Gomez

Bulgaria XI: Iliev, Pashov, Terziev, Hadzhiev, Nazev, Wanderson, Kostaninov, Despodov, Samov, Popov, Isa.

England XI: Pickford, Trippier, Maguire, Mings, Chilwell, Winks, Henderson, Barkley, Sterling, Kane, Rashford.

Reasons to be cheerful

19:00: Everyone trusts statistics, right? Good. Because some fella from Paddy Power has been studying the data in this fixture and unearthed some gems.

Bulgaria feature in the top 10 for England’s favourite opponents. The Bulgarian’s record stands at zero wins from 11 matches and only four draws to their name from those fixtures. That’s a whopping 64% win percentage.

I’ve actually been provided with the list of England’s favourite opponents from all 998 international of their previous fixtures.

Highest win percentage: Finland, Turkey, Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland and Hungary. Bulgaria are 9th.

The oppo…

18:55: So what have Bulgaria got? I made the fatal (not literally) mistake of saying the Czech Republic were awful before England’s demise (again, not literally) on Friday evening.

Having not reached the finals of the European Championship or World Cup since Euro 2004, Bulgaria are in something of a rut.

Krasimir Balakov took charge in May but his side sit bottom of Group A with three points and no wins from their opening six matches.

England captain Harry Kane helped himself to a hat-trick as the Three Lions ran roughshod over the Bulgaria defence at Wembley last month, the 4-0 scoreline potentially even flattering the visitors.

Will England need to make a stand?

18:50: Gareth Southgate and his players have been hit with questions surrounding potential racist abuse throughout the week leading into the game.

There will be 5,000 empty seats due to UEFA sanctions after Bulgaria supporters were charged with racism offences in qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Kosovo earlier in the year.

While the messages coming from the England camp have been a little mixed, it is clear they would be ready to push for UEFA to utilise their three-step protocol should more issues occur on Monday – including the game being abandoned.

Twitter reaction

Sandeep: That England side doesn’t excite me one bit! Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount should be starting.

Roll: FINALLY Gareth Southgate picks Tyrone Mings. Shame he hasn’t dropped Ross Barkley but one step at a time.

Mark: Gareth Southgate still not picking players who are in good form. What else are players like Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori and Trent Alexander-Arnold meant to do to get a game?!

NIR doing the business

18:40: Northern Ireland are showing England how it’s done against the Czech Republic as we speak.

Michael O’Neill’s side are 2-0 up inside 25 minutes thanks to Paddy McNair and Jonny Evans, who obviously share the Manchester United reject label.

The starting XI…

18:35: Well Gareth Southgate doesn’t hang about, does he? The England boss has made FIVE changes to the side that lost in Prague.

Aston Villa centre-back Tyrone Mings replaces Everton’s Michael Keane in defence. He makes his England debut alongside Harry Maguire.

Elsewhere Spurs star Harry Winks and Chelsea’s Ross Barkley both start in midfield. They replace Declan Rice and Mason Mount.

Ben Chilwell is recalled to the side in place of Danny Rose at left back, while Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford comes in for Jadon Sancho.

England XI: Pickford, Trippier, Maguire, Mings, Chilwell, Winks, Henderson, Barkley, Sterling, Kane, Rashford.

Subs: Pope, D.Henderson, Sancho, Rice, Mount, Tomori, Abraham, Keane, Gomez, Wilson, Alexander-Arnold

Gareth Southgate is set to change his team against Bulgaria tonight.

England lost their first qualifier for 10 years with a 2-1 defeat to the Czech Republic in Prague on Friday evening and Gareth Southgate is set to change his team accordingly against Bulgaria tonight.

Mason Mount, Michael Keane, Jadon Sancho and Declan Rice are all set to miss out on a place in the starting XI as the England boss looks to get back on track before next summer’s showpiece, with Marcus Rashford likely to return.

The Three Lions will take on Bulgaria for the 12th time in total, and will be looking to keep up their unbeaten record and seal an eighth victory over Krasimir Balakov’s men.

Harry Kane’s hat-trick and a Raheem Sterling effort gave England a comfortable 4-0 win at Wembley in the previous fixture last month, and a repeat of that will do nicely for the former Middlesbrough boss after their recent loss.
